{Interested In|Want To Learn|Need To No More About|What Is} Hip Hop Production?

By: Jessie Stone

If you love hip hop and want to be a part of its creation, but you do not have any particular talent for rapping or singing, you should experiment with hip hop production tactics. The producer deals with all of the non-vocal aspects of producing a hip hop track. Being a producer takes a different type of talent. You have to have a good ear for how the elements fit together, and have a vision for what will sound good as a finished product. Here are some of the different aspects of hip hop that a producer works with:

The "beat" refers not just to the percussion of a hip hop song, but to the whole instrumental track. Beats can be created from scratch, or they can involve sampling, which means incorporating an existing track into a new song. At the core of the beat Is the "drum beat", which is the percussive element. These, just like complete instrumental tracks, are sometimes sampled but sometimes original. Either way, in good hip hop production, even sampled elements are used in such a way that they become something completely different from the original.

The studio is where the producer does the bulk of his or her work. There are many elements to studio recording. These include:

Synthesizers. Synthesizers are machines that replicate the sounds of different instruments. They are useful when the budget for production prevents hiring musicians, and they are also useful when there is not enough space in the studio for musicians. However, these are not the only times that synthesizers are used. They have a place in high budget hip hop production as well. Live instrumentation is sometimes used, but synthesizers are more common.

A studio will, of course, also have recording equipment. Hip hop producers generally use multi-track recorders. In recent years, digital audio workstations have become common. Their use is somewhat controversial, since they have many built in elements that allow for a lack of energy and creativity on the producer's part.

For vocal recording, the primary tools used are either condenser microphones or dynamic microphones. Both types of microphone have their own sets of advantages and disadvantages. A condenser mic is higher quality and has a wider range, but is more expensive and less durable. The opposite is true of dynamic mics.

If these aspects interest you, and you find yourself wanting to learn more and to experiment with them, then hip hop production might be the career for you!
