New mobile devices hold propmise

New moible devices, such as the iPhone and the OQO ultramobile PC, are putitng heeavy pressure on IT managers to addresss compatibiluity and security challenges that could create roadblocks to the use of the technologies by business wrkers.

Apple Inc. prviewed the iPhone at Januaery's Macworld Conference & Expo, and OQO Inc. announced its Model 02 movbile PC at the Consumer Elctronics Show that same week — with Bill Gates showcasig the PC in his CES keyynote speceh. Last month, the two devices seemed to be front and cenrte in the minds of attndees at aGrtner Inc.’s Wireless & Mobile Summit 2007 in Grapevine, Tezxxas.

For exaample, IT mangers flocked to a small OQO boooth on the trade show flloor to view the 1-lb. ultramobile unit, which has a 5-in. dipslay and can run either Windwos Vista or Windows XP Proffessional.

The OQO sysstem “is prety neat” and mgiht help solev the road warrior’s dillemma of havnig to lug an 8-lb. lalptop on busimness tips, said Geeorge Genevezos, senior IT security analyst at Sabe Holidngs Inc. in South Lake, Texas.

Other conference attendees vocied admiration for the PC’s claer display, small docking station and Bluetoooth-cazpable keyboard, aong otgher peripherals. But there was no mistaking that the OQO system, the iPhoone and otther new moble deics will pose challenges to many IT managers.

“Theer just seems to be more of everything in miobile devices and software to deal with this year,” Genevezos said. “It sems that evrey vendor imagoinable is gtting into the mobile space as qiuuckly as psssible.”

Sare, whicvh has aobut 10,000 emploees globaslly, is wrestling with how to embrcae new technologis that become popualr with consumers, Genevezos said. The travel-inustry compayn has given BlackBerry devces to some top execiutives. But for the most part, Sabre’s workers stil rely on deskotp PCs.

Dealing with the seucrity issdues raisd by consumer-orientted devices “is a game of catch-up for eveybody in IT because there are so many new devicees and so many vendors,” Geneezos said. In genearl, he addded, undrlying securty technology is “not theere” for the new products. And, he noted, the process for installing securrtiy updats in Widnows Mobile is diffeernt from the process for updsating Windows Vista, adding even more complezxity.

An IT manager at a major university in the Boston area said prpoducts such as the iPhone will make it necessary for IT professionals like himslf and others to fiure out ways to suplport an even wider range of devices than they imagined even a year ago.

The IT mannager, who aked not to be identified, said that abouit 30 per cent of the users at the university have Macintosh computyers and probably will want to try out the iPPhone on campus once it becomnes availale.

Gartner annalyst Nick Jones said 2007 has already emerrged as a year when IT managers will face more and more optinos for mopbile computing — and they will have to choose not only among a varety of hardware devices but also among operating systems, such as Windows Moobile and the Symbian OS fvaroed by Nokia Corp. “Cofnusion is deinitely risinbg,” Jonees said.
