By: Jessie Stone

Birding as simple as it sounds could be an elaborate pastime. There are many levels when describing a birder . You can be a back yard birder who leisurely sits and waits or you can be an extreme bird watcher hunting the rarest of birds all around the world. Whatever type you are here are some bird watching tips that never falters.
Rule # 1:
Of utmost importance when it comes to birding is this first tip. If this does not fit your lifestyle, then this is not a hobby for you. Above all else, you should enjoy bird watching. This activity should be fun for all participants. Never ever force others or be forced into anything you do not like. If you have the first rule in then be prepared to experience an awesome world of birding.
Tip # 2:
Keep an open mind . Bird watching is not an activity limited to the visual senses. All of your senses need to work together to be successful at this hobby. Auditory is as important as sight when participating in this hobby. Listen and familiarize yourself with the songs that they produce. This will help you identify the bird you are looking at and more importantly spot the birds that are hidden from a glance.
Tip # 3:
Do your homework. The place you will be observing, the climate you are in and the environment as a whole will give you a clue of what birds inhabit that area . Narrowing around 10,000 species will be useful in identifying birds.
Tip # 4:
Start slow and work your way up. If you are a novice at this, do not even dream of identifying all the species just at a glace. Start with guided tours. The Audubon Society give guided tours. You will be lead by experts who can help you master the skills. Ask a lot of question. Start with a check list rather than with a blank slate.
Tip # 5:
Have a pencil and paper with you. When you spot a bird, do not just dive into your book. Take time to assess and internalize the features in your mind. Jot down noticeable characteristics, make a sketch, do what works for you. Watch the features of the bird's bill, the facial colors and features, the size, the wing design and even the feet. These traits even the smallest of details can differentiate one species to the other.
Tip # 6:
Watch how they move. A keen observational skill is necessary. See how they hold their heard up, how they flap their wings, the behavior of their flight and even how they perch on branches or the ground.
Tip # 7:
Match your equipment to the type of bird watcher you are . If you are watching them laid-back in your back yard you can use a cheap binocular or just with your bare eyes. Now if you are a hard core birder then you might need equipment more suited in giving fine detail even with great distances.
Tip # 8:
Make sure you cause no harm to the birds you are observing . They are there not just for you but for every bird watcher out there.
Hopefully these bird watching tips help you get started or make you a better birder than you already are.
