A Crash Course on Baby Shower Cakes

By: Norman Kirby

A friend, sister or cousin who will soon be a mother deserves to have a special treat to honor her and the baby in her tummy. A baby shower is a great way to celebrate this wonderful part of her life.
You can be as elaborate as you can with regard to how the baby shower will be executed or you can choose to be simple and invest in gifts for the baby. The theme of the party is almost always the basis of baby shower cakes. If the future mommy is going to have a boy, then you can choose a cake in the shape of a cute airplane, steam boat, car, or baseball mitt and ball. If she is going to have a baby girl then you can have a cake designed with a doll, ribbons or flowers. You can stick to light, pastel colors such as baby blue, pink, yellow, green, and white.
If the future mommy has a picture of her baby's sonogram you can have it printed on the cake because bakers do that nowadays. Of course, that would be perfectly creative unless your friends find it unappetizing to consume the picture part of the cake.
There are the bold future mommies who wish to be surprised and choose not to know the child's sex until after birth so you can stick to simple non-gender colors such as yellow and green or you can make use of all the pastel colors together to cover all possibilities. Of course, blue does not necessarily mean boy and pink does not necessarily mean girl but it has been embedded into most people's minds now that you can get away with generalizing for once.
You can choose for the shape of the cake to be small, like cupcakes placed in a cupcake-holding metal tier and decorate each cupcake with cute baby designs such as smileys, rattles, teddy bears, stars, flowers, bottles, cars, and the like. Or you can make small cube-shaped cakes and decorate them into something that resembles the building blocks. You can place the A B C letters on each side to make it look really cute and decorate with pastel colors.
You can also choose to have the traditional rectangular or circular baby shower cakes that have a nice frosting and icing that shouts out a unique and heartwarming message to the mother to be. A more fun alternative would be to make a large rectangular cake, cover it with plain white icing and edged with pink or blue icing then let each friend pipe down a short message to your friend kind of a like a freedom wall or letter but on cake. After everyone's contributed a message, then you can decorate the cake with some small embellishments such as sugar flowers, bits of chocolate or candy. Don't forget to take a picture of the entire cake before letting everyone dig in so that you can preserve the messages.
Another thing that you need to keep in mind is that the ingredients that are used for the cake should be safe especially for the mommy to be because she is eating for two. Know about the food that your pregnant friend is allergic to and keep these noted when the cake is made so that the baker will steer clear of them.
