A Drug that Kills Bacteria

Merely brushing one's teeth will prevent a disease which this hardworking dentist tries to look a cure for. In addition, this dentist says that 28 million suffer from periodontitis or gum disease in the United States. Majority of these people will experience tooth decay at an early stage because of this disease. The director of the University of Washington's center for research in oral biology says although the disease is not a killer, it affects nearly everyone to varying degrees and contributes to the $5 billion spent by Americans annually on dental care.

Research in electrical engineering and biochemistry as well as medicine and dentistry studies include the interdisciplinary fight against gum disease. But in all their research they've found no better preventive than regular brushing and flossing of the teeth. The bone holds the teeth through a connective tissue called collagen. Plaque happens if collagen, the wirelike fibrous protein is being interfered upon which will eventually cause teeth loosening and teeth loss.

In fact, 99 percent of plaque contains bugs or microorganisms. This causes the gums and the supporting structure beneath to be irritated. If only proper brushing and flossing of the teeth is practiced, the spread and attack of bacteria will be prevented. But because a lot of people won't brush their teeth, the public's need for a cure increases and the research for it continues. Recently, news from Europe indicated that plaque can be prevented by killing bacteria through the use of mouthwash.

Based on the dentist, bactericide chlorohexidine has been very beneficial during World War II because the British Army used this substance to sterilize surgical equipment. Bactericide chlorohexidine proved to work at that time but with a few drawbacks when a Danish scientist applied it as mouthwash. One of its flaws was that it stains the teeth black after a moment of applying it. Temporarily, one will lose his ability to taste according to the Danish scientist.

This molecule brings in more serious problems such as its potential to develop cancer. This is quite a shocking revelation because for a long period of time, this kind of drug with the same structure is consumable for humans and animals. But it doesn't stop there for it brings another problem. Your mouth can be too clean.

Now, imagine that you could sterilize your mouth to kill all the bugs. Our entire gastrointestinal is full of bugs. It is not all the time a bad effect because bugs aid in digestion, human metabolism, and production of Vitamin K.

I don't know if a drug that could only kill bacteria would be a good or bad thing. I will definitely place my dollar on bacteria that overcome drugs. When it comes to dental care, most people become irresponsible. Mere brushing of the teeth actually works if they only do it. And to make things even better, the disease could be healed if people would take care of their teeth by brushing. But I don't think you'll get much of the public to do it.
