A Guidebook to London's Top Dj bars

By: Lawrence Peters

London is suddenly awash with late bar nightclubs as the Licencing Legislation requires councils to consent to dj bars stay open later from Brixton to Wembley and allow acts. A case of the UK finally following the rest of Europe. At Bar Insider we direct through the maze which is nowadays Early morning Greater London. Every one of the bars underneath own late licences of at least 2 in the morning

Soho and its environs as always is the space to be noticed although for the inexperienced drinker it can sometimes feels like tourist hell at weekends. Even so Punk and Kabaret remain the "the place to be" music bars and you may well find yourself face to face with a celebrity that's if your friends are able to get into the VIP area. On the concoctions front Lab remains the cocktail father even though comparative newcomers like Milk and Honey and specialist regional specific cocktail bars such as Floridita are nipping at its heels. Nevertheless so much action has now migrated to the private members clubs like Soho House and Vanilla that it is questionable Soho will ever achieve respect it once enjoyed.

East Greater london if anything has now stolen Soho's position as the place to trade swish new latebar late bars helped needless to say by Westminster's infamously harsh licensing laws which have actually stopped on extra late licences in Soho. Leaders of the pack have to be Lounge Lover and the humongous (but private) Shoreditch House but the like of Last Days of Decadence and Hoxton latebar and Grill have their own elegance. Comically the preponderance of tasteful late night cocktail bar clubs in Shoreditch and Brick Lane has brought about a back lash with many consumers preferring the attractions of a local pub as a substitute . A honourable mention for Cargo too even if it really more a music venue than bar

North Greater london read Camden with as many gig pub clubs per square mile as there are style late night bars in Shoreditch and private members clubs in Soho. From the uber cool Proud to the rather grubby but constantly well-liked Monarch Camden is the homeland of the indie late bar club …… and nothing else. West London sorry to say suffers from the deadly RBKC (that's the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea) sickness who in their wisdom have actually put the kibosh on new late night late bar launches. Paradise in Kensal Green and Notting Hill Arts Club effectively have the scene to themselves.

What of South London? Well a grouping of laxer licensing legislation and more affordable prices has made it quite the locale of the moment (after East Greater london that is) with the Loft and Lost Society in Clapham both picking up various late bar accolades. More recently Peacock bar has been making waves with its mishmash of burlesque and cabaret early with retro 80s and 90s Djs later. See www.the-peacock-bar.co.uk for more details
