A Job in a Medical Field Can Be Gratifying

By: daniel greene

Many would-be doctors are lured into medicine by the promise of hefty salaries and professional prestige. The problem is that many college students feel defeated by the requirements of the training required to become a doctor. Often they end up spending a lot of time and money reaching for a brass ring that they just can't reach. If you are not 100% sure being a doctor is for you, you should stay clear of even attempting it. To be successful in medical school, one must have a solid combination of desire to do the work and the emotional strength that will be needed to survive the enormous competition that is a natural part of medical school.

A doctor at a community hospital recently commented he if he knew any young person considering a medical career, he would probably tell them just how much effort would be expected from them both in school and post graduate training as well. This doctor also says that anyone desiring a career in the medical field, must be completely confident and committed. While great sacrifice through the school and training period are the norm they will find redemption with the rewards they will reap down the line if they are able to pass the many tests ahead. There's no question that doctors will always be needed in society. This doctor also stated that he hasn't ever wanted to try something else and hasn't ever regretted his decision to become a doctor.

It will take a staggering 9 years at the very least to become a doctor, medical school will take four years and you will spend at least one year in an internship. And to be a specialist in a certain field, up to five years of residency is required - years that won't be bringing in any substantial profit. Once the needed degree has been attained there are so many different opportunities in the medical field that it is almost a sure thing that the new doctor will find a place that suits his talents wonderfully. One can find a position in private practice, institutions, public health, research facilities, or many other medical locations. Women who plan to enter the medical profession have no disadvantages, other than the need to compete with male counterparts. A woman can feel disheartened as a result, although she can do so many things that change the world in the medical field.

There is one doctor who peddles himself as a family physician, and he claims that he got into his medical profession practically unwillingly in the beginning. While in the navy, he spent six years as part of the medical corps. After such service and working with great doctors and nurses it can become clear where you want to end up.

Doctors and surgeons will point out that one of the drawbacks of their jobs is the long hours they're required to work. The physician states that he is disturbed upon occasion that there is not a sufficient amount of time to enjoy with his family. He tells us there is no way to get an exact time for hours worked, but he estimates to working at least 60 hours per week. He spends this time in the office with patients and seeing patients who are hospitalized. And even when he is not at the office or the hospital, he is on call, 24 hours a day. To a lesser extent he must commit time to physical exams on-going treatments and preventative care.

Many doctors don't have contracted salaries, but rather are paid based on the amount of patients they see and the other medical services they provide. For those who are brave enough to make it through the grueling education and extremely long hours, there will be rewards. Above and beyond the financial aspect, the doctor states that participating in an uncommon diagnosis and being able to prescribe treatment is the source of his greatest satisfaction.
