A Nasty Noisy Nuisance

By: Michael Scoggins

The ear specialist was agitated as he played around with the hearing aid controls. He claims that those who live in big cities may have hearing loss if changes aren't done today. Also a noted noise fighter in California, this gentleman and ear specialist is not alone. Vehicles are among the sources of noise pollution, according to environmentalists.

So far they are successful in their fight. Though already in existence, the anti noise bill can and should be improved. With the anti noise ordinance passed by New York City, even ice cream vendors have to limit the number of times they jingle their bells.

Still, the beat continues to play. Scientific evidence proves that exposure to noise has severe medical consequences. Eventually, 20percent of all Americans who are exposed to the noise of modern life are most likely to develop hearing loss, according to a report by the Environmental Pollution Agency.

Around 80 million Americans are injured by noise in some way, the report also stated. Because of the many men and women who work in noisy industries, hearing loss is now an occupational hazard. Among those who experience the serious effects of noise are the man from Pennsylvania who watches TV with the volume on full to hear over the noise of a factory and the kids who live near the Los Angeles International Airport.

Bullhorns are used by teachers in areas near airports just so they can be heard by their students over the roar of big jets. Irritated by the constant noise day in and day out, the children in school involve themselves in more fights. Noise can reach dangerous levels, thus increasing the possibility of hearing impairment among children. Noise in other indoor areas is not bad as the level of noise in these classrooms.

The heartbeat of a fetus gets faster and its muscles contract upon exposure to loud noise. Unhappiness, irritability, and hyperactivity are among the symptoms exhibited by a person exposed to noise. A person's work is affected by noise, usually resulting in him doing a poor job.

While a worker may give the same output, his performance would be of poor quality. Noise can also cause sore throats, as people strain to talk above it, and lack of sleep. A person might be able to get sleep, but not get a good rest.

According to researchers who studied African tribes, hearing loss is attributed not to age but to noise overexposure. The tribe's aged can hear just as well as any young adult American.

Those 50 and over don't share the same predicament as Americans also 50 and over who were exposed to the sound of gunshots and cannons. The effects of these loud noises only start to make themselves present when the men get older.
