A Review of The Southampton Botleigh Grange Hotel in Hampshire

By: Samantha McClintock

History
The Hotel was developed as a private Countryside Manor in the 17th century. It was in this time, that Oliver Cromwell came to stay. The Estate in this period was more than a hundred acres and according to regional history publications, contained the sizeable freshwater lake with a tiny but picturesque weir, where it overflowed as a waterfall, into the smaller lake on its approach to the sea. It is still in evidence today.
Like a quantity of Historical English Houses, Botleigh Grange is not lacking its ghostly chamber. A former owner is said to have kept his daughter confined within 1 of the principle bedrooms due to the woman having become ‘enamoured of a certain knight’. Marks made by means of her fingernails on the door, in her frantic efforts to flee or else dying of malnourishment, have been evident for countless years. Her apparition may perhaps even now stroll the landings at the hour of midnight. In close proximity, stands a ‘haunted oak’. Her father stood at this point to gaze upon her imprisonment and revel in her suffering.
A monument of mystery – with no message or given name, stands in the grounds. It is believed to mark the position at which a former owner’s daughter fell from her horse and was killed.
Thomas Hellyer Foord, a shipbuilder and contractor of Rochester, purchased the 100-acre estate during 1868. He was responsible for the addition of the Tower above the porch, that housed a clock with Westminster chimes, by Buggins of Clerkenwell. New additions along with decorations had been carried out in person by 1 of the family. The principle addition being the oak panelled walls plus a magnificent decorative ceiling that can be observed in the ‘Cocktail Lounge’. The engraved mantelpiece depicting acorns (which is situated inside the Lakeside Bar) might have been a reminder of the family industry carried out at Acorn Wharf. Mr. Foord, being fond of animals, established a herd of two hundred deer on the estate, and the occasional deer may even now be viewed strolling about the grounds of the Hotel. Thomas Hellyer Foord died, at the age of 93, in 1917.
The Estate was eventually offered in ‘lots’ in 1923. One ‘lot’ being the Manor House plus twenty five acres of gardens and lakes. It was changed into an exclusive Hotel in 1932 and continued as such until the Plumpton family purchased it in 1949 and acquired a full licence to run the ‘Botleigh Grange Hotel’ as a Licensed Country House Hotel, and whilst it is still owned by the Plumpton family to this day it is run by Legacy Hotels & Resorts who operate a selection of 3 and four star hotels throughout the UK, Jersey as well as Southern Spain.
