A Russian wolfhound painting, haunted?

By: Anthony Sampson

The innocents, a local play finally opened and introduced some local actors. And the subject of many strange tales is a portrait, which happens to hang on the set of this show. The owner of the picture who prefers to remain anonymous has had the picture for many years. The lady cannot recall why she bought the picture all she knew was she was going down the road, parked suddenly and bought it for reasons unknown to her up to now.

The clerk was still taking the portrait from the window while she pondered how exactly she can afford to shoulder that expensive portrait. It's almost time for the children to go back to school and books, clothes, and school supplies are to be bought. So she thought to herself first that she will tell the clerk that while it was a beautiful portrait, she just can't afford to purchase it. I just want that portrait and I am going to get it no matter what, the lady shouted these very words, prompting the clerk to stay in place and no longer returned the portrait from where it previously hung.

And afterward she paid the attendant, got her painting and walked out still in disbelief about how she could not afford such a thing and how she will have a hard time explaining to her spouse her spur of the moment choice to purchase it. Its subject was a Russian wolfhound known as a Borzoi, painted using oil as medium, and it was done in the 1800's or the early 1900's, perhaps. Most would agree that it was an enchanting portrait but then for some who have been trained and are familiar with the Borzoi, they should be able to point out that it was absurd how the artist chose to show only the head and shoulders of the dog, and cast it in an almost straight on pose. There is no proper proportion when you look closer at the shoulder and chest.

This lady who bought the picture was very familiar with the breed, and knew exactly how a Borzoi should look like and this made things much weirder. Strangely, when her husband arrived home that night, he did not blow up as she initially expected upon learning that she bought that instead of the things needed by their children for he instead got so drawn to that painting, the exact same way she was upon seeing it.

Both experts and amateurs in photography took shots of this, but in the long span of comparing the photos, it was mysterious how no two shots of it ever came out to look exactly the same. There are occasions when the dog portrait would show a spectral face on its right side, then at some times it would look flat then 3 dimensional in others, but at most times, whether the portrait would appear as either black and white or in full color, strange lights would seem to emanate from it.

As the husband and wife talked about the portrait, they lingered about the possibility of it being haunted by a supernatural force, but he quickly dismissed it, stating that light reflections or their overactive imaginations are to be blamed for nothing could possibly be unnatural about the painting. A large plate made of ceramic, with a loud crash, fell on the floor but it was not broken into pieces, which was truly a mystery.

After hearing so many tales about the mysterious Borzoi portrait, the director producer of the playhouse sought the couple owning it who gladly loaned it for him, to be a good background feature for his play, the Innocents, which revolved on supernatural subjects. Openly, they discussed with the producer that the portrait might have something mystical about it, specifically something that entered their home the day they bought it and they believe that letting him use this for his show can shed some light to their queries. They wish that this was true, at least.
