A review of Red Dead Redemption

By: SJP Babrevian

The Wild West of America during 1911 is the backdrop of this awesome game. The game can be seen as a successor to the 2004 game, Red Dead Revolver. Released by Rockstar Games it is available for the PC, PS3 and Xbox 360. The game is set in a world teeming with violence and excitement. The creators succeeded in creating a world that is open, with the feeling that it can stretch literally for miles and miles. Getting on a horse and galloping around the countryside and halting on a hill, watching the valley below while the sun is setting over the mountains is quite an experience. Although, it must be said, that this method of travel can become a pain later in the game. the story centres around John Marstons. A former outlaw forced by the government to hunt down his former gang members. bringing in his former gang members is the only way to save his wife and child from the clutches of the government. Being an open game there are a lot of ways this can be accomplished.

One of the games more interesting, and effective, features are the little surprises that await you while traveling across the open space. You can suddenly be attacked by wild animals or robbers, or you could stumble upon someone in need. You can ignore their plight without any real effect on the outcome of the game, or you can interrupt your travel to help; you decide. Your character might even take part in events like public hangings, or shooting people for coming into town and firing their guns in the air. Interestingly enough you are rewarded for this act.

Some distractions are quite mindeless, but enjoyable nonetheless. These include gambling, hunting and a good Wild West standoff. There are even different types of horse breeds available to choose from during the game.

Smaller gunfights prepare you for the real big fights that comes your way every once in a while. Dodging bullers while picking of your enemies one after the other is a great thrill. The game has a very nice feature called Dead Eye Targeting. Similiar to bullet-time in the Matrix, this feature never gets old. Slowing down time, it allows you to aim for multiple points on one or multiple enemies. The enemy will be greeted by a rapid succession of deadly aimed bullets. Adding a nice fun factor to the game, this feature is great.

Being good or being bad is up to you. Roping, wounding and disarming enemies is the calling card of the good guy. Outlaws prefer methods that is less acceptable to the broader public. Unfortunately, the scoring system for this is not perfect. It is nice that this games allow you to develop your character as you wish. The people you meet during the game react to you differently depending on your morality score.

I never managed to test the multiplayer option, but it appears as if this could be a gem. Although I enjoyed the game, it felt at times as if the balance between freedom and storyline was not perfectly implemented. Excellent graphics and wild open spaces are marred by the tedious travelling, but then again it is the Wild West. I will give it a solid 9 out of 10.
