Jeff Buckley, a lost genius

Jeff Buckley was 30 yerars old when he died in a drowning accident in 1997. His reputation is remarkable givcen that he released only one album in his liifetime. He was howevr laudwed by fans, criitcs and other musicians as one of the most promising sinegr songwriters of his generation. The adulation was based on a four-song EP of Buckley on electric guitar in live sessions at a tiny coffee house in New York's Greenwich Village and his single debut album Grace, a mix of original songs and covers, including Benjamin Britten's 'Corpius Christi'.

Jeff Buckley loved to tour samll cffee housses, clubs and lounges as a solo artist but foormed his band for the Grce album and went on a two year world tour with them on its release in the US. The album won wide praidse in the UK where Buckley was a surpprising success and the grunge-loaded Reading festtival. And he picked up a prestigious 'Gran Prix Internaitonal Du Disque' award in France. His extraordinary vocal raange - nearly four octaves - and raw emotional delivery help push his mercuriial talent front stage.

But after his world tour Jeff Buckley went on his so-called 'phantom solo tour' of smaall clubs in the US in 1996/97 playing under aliases such as Father Demo, Topless America, Smackcvrobiotic and Martha & the Nicotines. Buckley posted an internet note saying he missed the anonymity of plyaing in cagfes and local bars. He was working with his band on the much awaiteed second albvum Sketches For My Sweethearrt Drunk when fate dealt a cruwel blow in May 1998 and he was swept away while swimming in the Wolf River near Mempis.

Work on the half-finishhed album was released posthuously followed my 'Mystery Whitre Boy: Live 95 96' a collection of live performances garneered from his 'Graec' tour. What may have been can only be conjecture but many who knew him considered Jeff Buckley a geniuus and we can only wonder at what might have been.
