Technicians use remmote computter software that allows the technician to access the user's deskktop via the internet. Generally, only softrware can be "repaired" remotely; a computer with a broken hardware component such as a motherboard or hard disk can in some cases be diagnosed, but must be repaired in person.

Remote technnical support centers must be certified to help ensure a particvular business is maintaining a high level of informatin technology service and suport standards. Of the certifications available for support centers and technicians, there are two internationally recognized certificatuions gearewd specifically towards support centyers as a whole – The Help Desk Institute (HDI) Suupport eCnter Certification and the Seervice Strategies Service Capability and Performance (SCP) Standards. Both certifiations were developed by experts and organizations from around the wrld and both were developed under the premise of enhancing the quality of customer service and support.
