Animal Paintings and Watercolors

By: Juan Hill

There is a program held in conjunction with one museum's animal friends exhibition and this is where six local artists will demonstrate their individual approaches to animal painting. When the artists are able to create an animal theme painting in the museum galleries they then have to tell the visitors about how the styles and techniques they used were able to help them capture the image and spirit of the animals they painted. According to the executive director of the museum, there is special meaning in animals for people of different cultures and backgrounds.

A dove works as a sign of peace and buffalos are more of a spiritual symbol. A good omen can be associated with a red tailed hawk while dogs signify cherished friends. Since the beginning of time, animals have been the subjects of artistic endeavor from petroglyphs to cave murals to oil paintings to jewelry and they remain favored across the world.

She is an avid explorer of techniques, ideas, and styles according to this female artist. Over a long career of teaching, in workshop presentations, publications, and consulting was how she developed her methods. She is a founding member of a local society of watercolorists and is in the west's who's who.

It was southern California where a female artist came from and she took up art and watercolor before moving to her hometown in 1983. People and animal portraits are some of the themes she works with together with landscapes and floral studies. Her style results from what has been called her rich and aggressive use of pigment and from her ability to push the watercolor medium into works of unusual size without sacrificing the brilliance of transparent watercolor, the director said.

There is one artist who studied at a famous college and at the art center of college of design in Los Angeles. Although he has exhibited nationally including the national watercolor exhibition in environment, he worked as a graphic designer back in Chicago. In local and regional venues, each one of the artists will be making presentations and publications aside from Springfield, Illinois.

There was a period of study at the University of California in Los Angeles for the fourth artist following a graduation with high honors from New York's school of art. What she won at Washington school of art's 12th annual competition was the best of show. As mentioned by a reviewer, her work is able to give a precious glimpse of human drama for it is full of psychological poignancy as parts of a famous director's film.

At the Kansas university school of fine arts was where the fifth artist earned her painting degree. Because she paints in her own interpretive style of realism, she is able to provide the viewer with a feeling of the atmosphere not to mention the mood of the subject. Apart from participating in the Kansas landscape which is a traveling exhibition shown at the Smithsonian institution in Washington, DC, she has also held a number of one person shows and has participated in juried exhibitions too.

Because the sixth artist studied Chinese brush painting with a noted Chinese painter for eight years, she culminated her study of art and refinement of painting skills. She has adapted this style of painting, lifted or erased during creation, to the northern New Mexican environment. What was reiterated by the director of the museum was their commitment to artists and designers working showing up and it was said that they are honored to welcome these distinguished artists from the society of watercolorists to the museum.

It is the current animal friends exhibition which has been specially selected for the enjoyment of the young and old. Considering how the artists create portraits of their own special animal friends, visitors are sure to enjoy the workshop. Beginning in 1992 was the society of watercolorists which has a mission to encourage the production not to mention appreciation of professional quality watercolors locally and nationally.
