Capoliveri , how the vacation villa phenomenon found its new home.

By: Jim Bobbson

Creation in advancement
One of the developments that the Tuscan paese has gone through is the rebirth of familiar abandoned out-buildings into splendid holiday villas. The edifices, some no more than a windproof out-house used to keep cows or crops, have been restructured into some of the most spectacular and sought after after bases from which to enjoy a holiday in the region. The switches in the countryside materialized for 2 reasons: first due that local farms were incapable to meet the demands for produce from an ever thriving population, and 2nd, that they were incapable to compete on price with the larger and more centralized distribution companies (a similar change took place in the British Isles with the procession of Supermarkets in the early 1990s, the only difference being unfortunately that English farmers did not have the same guarantee of fair weather like the Italian's did, on which to build a future). As the huge production companies took over food distribution, the Tuscan farmers were left reflecting on how to make it to the end of the week, and Agriturismo was born.
