Career woes welcome new physicians

By: Betty Hoyt

If you are a doctor who happened to finish med school in 1955, it was the golden time for upcoming doctors to grab great opportunities which meant great pay in jobs from different wonderful places. One graduate didn't have it so good. He was among those who may be a medical school graduate but then got into a harsh career market with lower remuneration and high career uncertainty.

Though it was once the golden profession, it has now become rusty as the once sacred doctor patient relationship has been corrupted and the doctors also have less autonomy with the rise of managed care systems. Nowadays, many of these medical students learn where they shall be conducting their postgraduate residencies. The day of matching can cause a celebration for those who shall work for the hospitals they like. For those who are not as auspicious, this is just a dismal reality check on what awaits them.

Surveys show that there are just too many doctors and schools that produce doctors. In a recent report from the journal of the American Medical association, more than 10 percent of doctors trained in a specialty still are unable to find career opportunities in some parts of the country. A study that is funded by a private firm espouses the wholesale closing of medical schools in the US due to too many physicians and also for medical schools to admit students 20 to 25 percent less.

A medical institution located in Boston, which also serves and teaches medical subjects for a university stated that they will retrench many unfortunate doctors. One doctor, who is now dean at a prestigious school of medicine, said it wasn't that way when he finished school. He remembers clearly that there were tons of opportunities in any of the fields they want to pursue. Many students graduating in medicine in the past few years, have chosen to go down the path of generalist fields such as family practice, paediatrics, and internal medicine due to the constant surge they have observed in these fields since the 1990s or earlier.

Specialty fields of study and careers which include anaesthesiology, diagnostic radiology and psychiatry see a plunge as noted by the national resident matching program. One example is on how anaesthesiology is scarce when it comes to physician enrollees. One med student who will soon graduate said that he wanted to get into anaesthesiology but then feel short as he realized the scarce work opportunities available. He says there is so huge a supply these days. But then, a lady doctor who is also among the board members of the American medical association states that the reported excess of doctors is not necessarily true especially in the rural areas like in her town where the demand for doctors is great.

She furthers that many among the cr'me de la cr'me do not venture into the medical profession thanks to the unfavorable things that they hear about the doomed medical profession, even if they do not know what the truth really is. Despite being in this uncertain situation, many of these new doctors brim with optimism perhaps spurred by the wide popularity of medical themed TV shows that make many people appreciate the field of medicine. Even if they no longer have the same autonomy they used to have or earn as much as they used to, she still claims that this is the greatest job in whole wide world.
