Cavities May Already Form While a Child Is Still a Baby

By: Alan Keegan

In need of dental care both in the home and from dentists are babies. The earlier that care is given to a child, the sooner you can make sure that his teeth would grow and develop well. The importance of early care is based on the fact that primary teeth provide the space necessary for permanent teeth. Early loss of baby teeth would result in new teeth coming out crooked since the other teeth may shift to the empty space.

Rubbing the gums with a cool spoon or a clean finger could alleviate the pain of a teething child's sore gums. By consulting a dentist or pediatrician, you can find out how to help your baby experiencing discomfort. Using a slightly wet washcloth or gauze pad is recommended to wipe the infant's gums days after he is born.

The moment the child's first tooth arrives, tooth brushing should begin so that plaque buildup can be avoided. You should also use a toothbrush specially designed for young children. It should have soft, end rounded bristles that won't scratch delicate young gums, and is small enough for tiny mouths.

The development of baby bottle tooth decay may occur when a baby drinks something sweet before going to bed. The teeth would develop cavities and baby teeth loss could occur. Without proper treatment, permanent teeth would come out looking very crooked. Giving a bottle of water or a pacifier would lessen the chances of a baby developing baby bottle tooth decay.

You can prevent small problems from worsening by taking the baby to the dentist. During the visit, your dentist will examine your baby's teeth, and check for cavities and any other problems, such as those that can result from thumb sucking. While the dentist checks on the baby's teeth, he or she will also give you tips on oral hygiene and proper diet for your child.

While the child is young is the best time to instruct your child on how to take care of his teeth. You can do this by first being the example for them. If you have good dental care habits such as brushing and flossing, then there's a big possibility for your child to do the same things.

At the age of two to three, children should already learn how to brush their teeth. Parents need not give too much guidance to five year olds who should already know how to brush on their own. Flossing requires some mastery, and a child may have to practice it first before they can do it right. The teeth of children should be flossed by their parents first when they are around two or three years of age. By the age of eight, the child will just be needing some supervision as he flosses by himself.

Fluoride is a necessary mineral for strong tooth enamel and protection against tooth decay. Young children are in need of fluoride more than other people in different age groups. Stronger and healthier teeth are formed when fluoride gets merged into developing enamel during the formation stage of teeth.

For children to have fluoride, they can have it in either two ways, internally or topically. Tablets that contain fluoride and food that contain fluoride are sources of fluoride that are taken internally. A child's teeth is further protected from cavities through topical fluoride which can be applied by a dentist or simply brushed on at home.
