Convert Ogg to Mp3

By: Norman Kirby

Ogg is an open source software that supports multiple file formats for audio and video digital data encoding and decoding. Developed and maintained by the Xiph.Org Foundation, Ogg provides a whole host of compression services including lossy and lossless compression formats for video and audio. Speex (specific for voice data) and Vorbis (general audio data) are the audio formats of OGG used for lossy compression while FLAC and OggPCM are the codecs used for lossless compression. There are other OGG codecs available for video file formats, but for this article, only audio file formats would be referenced in order to address the question of how to convert Ogg to Mp3.
File extensions, identifying Ogg files
Speex codecs have the file extension .spx while Vorbis codecs have the file extension .ogg (Vorbis encoded music) or .oga (audio only). If you are interested in converting music files you have which is in Ogg file format, you are most likely interested in converting files with extension .ogg as Xiph.Org have specified that .ogg be used specifically for Vorbis encoded music to avoid confusion. The extensions .oga and .ogv are used for audio only and video (with or without audio) compressions respectively. Audio books and podcasts uses Speex codex, and will therefore have .spx as their extension.
Why convert Ogg to Mp3?
There is currently a campaign to dislodge Mp3 as the premier codec of choice by people and replace it with Ogg. Proponents argue that Ogg is simply better in all aspects to Mp3 - it is free and is open source (and therefore has a large community actively developing and improving the code). It also compresses better with better results (debatable). However, until Ogg gets full hardware and software support from other products, Mp3 will remain king of the music file. It is largely undisputed that Mp3 is the universal audio codec among all compression codecs available. Finding a player or an audio software that will play your Ogg files may be a bit hard, especially for the technically challenged - hence why many people opt to convert Ogg to Mp3.
How to convert Ogg to Mp3
Converting your audio files from Ogg to Mp3 is relatively easy. All you have to do is download and install any audio software which has the capability to convert Ogg files into Mp3. Most audio converters nowadays have the capability to convert many file formats. Once you have downloaded and installed the audio converter (there are free and paid software available), you can launch it and immediately start converting Ogg files into Mp3.
You can set the settings of the program to convert your selected files into Mp3, choose the bit rate compression (higher bit rate means better quality but also larger file sizes), and allow for batch conversion. You can also normalize (so the volume stays the same for all files) your audio files with some converters. Finally, some audio converters feature ID3 tag editing capabilities, allowing you to add ID3 tags for better tracking of all your music files.
