Dentists With Big Hearts Share Their Blessings

By: Thomas Kohler

Seated at small waiting room of a dental clinic was a black haired, wide smiled young woman. Occupying the dental seat was an older woman whose teeth were being examined by a young dentist. Thanks to the low cost services of the clinic, she is able to get dental care which she otherwise couldn't afford.

A project of a non profit organization operation, the dental clinic has operated for 43 years. For many years, the clinic operated a health clinic for pregnant women and infants in the organization's building. The clinic provides children with dental care as well. The clinic was able to operate through private donations, one of which was made by a woman who included us in her will. After the foundation ran out, we went through the services we were offering and discovered that what we offered were already offered by other agencies. The lack of money to continue the services led to the closing of the clinic.

They chose to rent out the main building and remodel the garage to address the needs of low income persons with regard to dentistry. For the conversion of the former garage into a dental office, $10,000 was raised by the organization. The used equipment for the office had already been provided for by dentists for the dental clinic before.

The results of an interview with each of the prospective patients determine who are eligible for low cost care. The clinic does not accept patients who could afford private dental care, to avoid competing with area dentists. Whether or not a person is qualified is determined by the clinic's sliding scale, which also helps them determine how much to chage their patients. How much to charge is based on how many people are in the person's family as well as how much the person is getting from his job.

A family consisting of four members and making $1,000 or more a month is not qualified for care at the clinic. The family, however, can receive dental examination costing only $8 if its monthly income is between $800 and $1,000. A dental examination fee of $5 is given to families with incomes less than $800 a month. You would pay an average of $15 to $20 for a dental examination received from private Santa Fe dentists.

40 and 50 year olds are showing up at the clinic, and you know through observation that they haven't had much dental care. The clinic's patients consist mainly of children. The clinic dentists gave many children dental treatments after qualifying for federally funded county special programs. Most of the clinic fees or all is paid for by one program.

The clinic presently schedules 20 patients in a week, but the dentists there can welcome more. The secretary began to schedule patients only on specific days but not on specific times because far too many patients were missing their appointments and leaving their dentists waiting. Patients who come on the day they are scheduled are seen by the dentist according to who came first. People who come in are usually given lessons by us on personal oral hygiene. The clinic gives out toothbrushes and dental floss to patients who apparently don't have them and haven't used them. On the next appointment, they usually have stronger and brighter teeth.
