Desiring for an Untouched Location

When it comes to traveling, are you someone who is looking for a vacation spot kept raw? Destinations where they would be the first official settlers become the tourists' motivation to go to the ends of the earth. Joining together when they arrive in the continent of Antarctica are New Zealand and South America sightseers.

From explorers, to scientists, to sealers, they are the ones who have been to the continent found in 1820. Putting together the United States and Mexico will give you an idea of how big the continent is but explorations are limited to the partially ice free coast from its 7,000 foot thick ice blanket. What is necessary to get there is to be on a ship strong enough to handle the impact from ice and sailing through stormy seas. Aside from being the first ones in the McMurdo Sound area, 2,000 miles south of and New Zealand, the 14 men and 12 women were also the first ones to reach the south of the Antarctic Circle. With a US Navy facility already existing in this location, about 800 sailors and scientists are staying where British explorers in the past have settled and faced inexplicable hardship and death. The south of the equator faces seasons in direct opposite of that in the Northern Hemisphere.

Only two airline stewardesses represent the number of women who were able to come here since 1957. Even so, the Navymen at McMurdo Station still greeted them without any kind of enthusiasm when the women arrived. It turned out that many sailors did not want to interrupt a long record of being womanless, something to boast about when they arrived home, by watching two girls for a few minutes.

Few people at McMurdo now have indicated any excitement over the arrival of the tourist ships in January and February. How the sailors, civilian technicians, and the scientists see it is that all of them were selected for this job because of their skills. The thought of tourists wandering around the place takes the edge off the adventure and romance of Antarctica. Every trip comes with warm pants, mittens, a red parka, and kodachrome from the travel service but laundry, seasick pills, tips, and drinks are optional.

Antarctica was inhabited solely by US Navy personnel and American scientists since 1955. Marinating their own scientific stations here and on adjacent islands are nine other nations. How will the Navy see the tourists' arrival? For the commander of naval forces in Antarctica, they cannot restrict people from visiting because they have no territorial claim. Any visit to their stations though is another matter.

Those who are not self supporting are not allowed to enter. A problem like this is easy to fix with a well equipped ship. There is a necessity for proper safety precautions. The tourist agency has provided us with a copy of their operational plan and I am satisfied that they meet the test of safety.

There are a lot of things to see and do here including the first nuclear power reactor in Antarctica and visitors can attend services at the Chapel of the Snows, visit the ship's store, post exchange, or have a few drinks at the enlisted clubs. A number of them are conservationists, hikers, and avid bird watchers, and so trips to penguin rookeries and where seals, skua gulls, and killer whales stay are on the list plus a visit to where the early explorers settled in.
