Displaying Your Art : Buying, Framing and Arranging

By: Robin Martin

Do you have blank walls in your home or office space? Congratulations! You have an inspired blank canvas to fill. But you also have the pressure of filling the space in a pleasing way. A daunting task for sure but one that can tantalize you with ideas limited only to your imagination. If you do not give it the proper attention and thoughtful deliberation it warrants, it will end up riddled with holes from ever-changing nail holes. If you put little thought into its finished appearance, it can demean a room completely and portray you as an artistically ignorant person. But with a little thought and time, and a few carefully chosen decorations a wall can great you like a friend whenever you see it.

The presence of art can truly create the essence of a room. And contrary to what you may think, you don't need a background in art to get this done, or buy an expensive, famous piece. Interior designers, framing specialist, and art collectors dispel the mystery of hanging art by sharing the tricks they've learned.

Rule number one is to consider an empty room with the same weight as an empty wall. Think back. When is the last time you heard someone remark on how they reclined on the most sumptuous couch or settee? Think about the last time you heard someone talk about the gorgeous dining table they ate from at someone's home? It's likely you've never heard anyone say that. But you probably have heard someone talk about an amazing painting in someone's home.

Some collectors believe that you should always let the artwork set the mood or tone in a room. Most of us will buy furniture first and then try to select a piece of art that matches. This doesn't mean you need to remove yourself completely from the experience of buying art. Watch offending someone in the art world. Do not go in and request a piece that matches your curtains, sofa or carpet. Designers know this all too well. You can still use other methods to meet your personal need to matching colors, however. A method that designers recommend is to first select your artwork, then choose objects in the room, such as flowers or pillows, that repeat the main colors in the painting and help to unify the room. A white mat will not interfere with the piece of art that it frames, but the designer can insert another mat under the white one in a color that contrasts or compliments the work and ties it into the rest of the room.

The frame can truly be the most effective way of establishing the artwork's place in the room. Currently, frames that are simple and thin are the most popular. Contemporary, modern and sleek designs go beautifully with these frames. If you have a more formal room, you may opt for a frame that is silver or gold, or made of thick, Baroque-styled wood. Are you overwhelmed with what to do with that huge expanse of wall? Some designers choose to center one over-sized painting on it.

If your home is modern you are in luck, as much of today's modern contemporary art is created on a much larger scale and is usually quite affordable. Condos are frequently adorned with large posters, encased in a black or wood frame with white matting. If the item you want to hang is too small for the wall you want to put it on, many designers will use a larger mat and frame. For a truly impressive result, leave a larger amount of white space at the mat's bottom. Simply request this when you take it to the frame gallery for framing. You can go to your local art store and have your mat cut to custom order, and for even more dramatic effect, make sure that choosing the proper lighting for your piece is a priority.

As a beginner, there are some tips you should keep in mind that will help you to do your best. Always measure the dimensions of the wall for your artwork, and take those measurements with you. Local galleries are great spot to begin your search for a memorable piece. You can expect to pay anywhere from $20 to $3,000 for an original painting or sculpture. Do you still have questions? Often you can simply arrange to make a deposit while you take the piece home for a test run. Shows put on by local art schools and outdoor art festivals are good places to find art. If an original is out of your price range, you may be able to find a print or lithograph of the piece at a lower price. Don't forget to scour garage sales, flea markets, and thrift stores for amazing discoveries of vintage art and frames.
