Drugs play a role in pain free dentistry

By: Hers Perez

This woman is a self proclaimed chicken. She shuddered in her chair when her ears got pierced. That is why each time she thinks about two of her teeth getting pulled out, she gets so scared. When it comes to the fear of flying, getting into a dental chair ranks alongside the phobia of seeing spiders, as well as the fear of flying and of heights. It is downright ridiculous how, as stated by the American Dental Association, that an estimate of 145 million people avoid getting dental work due to fear. But now, patients are led out of the misery of being very fearful as dentistry has made some huge moves for this very aspiration.

This woman thinks she is in good hands as her dentist not only practices general dentistry, but completed a 2 year residency in anesthesia as well and she is right about what she thinks. He is not an oral surgeon, but is the only dentist in the St Louis area licensed to use intravenous anesthesia to make a patient totally unconscious during a dental procedure in his office. States, many of them, mostly require dentists to get a special license before they can administer medications intravenously. Managing emergencies and getting advanced training in anesthesia are required of these dentists plus they also have to have their emergency equipment ready within their clinics.

The most commonly used pain control in a dentist's office is local anesthesia, in which a swab deadens the gum before an injection, and is used to block nerve endings and numb the area that requires work. The only downside is the discomfort of a temporary fat lip feeling as you walk out of the office but this is not too bad.

Relaxation can be done with anti anxiety agents or sedatives. There are times when the patient would need to inhale nitrous oxide which is also called the laughing gas which makes the patient feel euphoric and excited. Tranquilizers bring into being a state of conscious sedation in the patient who becomes receptive and awake, not at all in a deep sleep but he would indeed feel like he was in a haze.

It was declared by a local dentist that conscious sedation is very safe and sound, as long as the person is awake and verbally responsive, such as you asking, how you doing, Joe, and he still answers you back intelligibly.

With prolonged use of nitrous oxide, patients start feeling so nauseous, but such has never become a trouble if oral tranquilizers are used. Patients who want conscious sedation, however, have to come with a companion who will also drive them back home. It is a fact that the oral tranquilizer also takes time to work its magic, versus the almost instant effect of an injection. This patient would be given a tiny pill and soon after the drug takes effect which is in half an hour or so, he is asked to return to the dental seat.

We now see the rise of gadgets and technologies that boost dentistry to a level of high technology, making treatments achieved with ease and speed. Bridging the gap between technology and comfort are today's revolutionary dental sedation methods. While you may not feel any pain at the dentist's office, you could hurt a bit when the bill comes because some of the new methods of pain free dentistry are not covered by insurance. One should know that conscious sedation or nitrous oxide is not covered by the average dental plan. It is the patient who will shoulder these for these are highly optional.

Most plans cover unconscious sedation, or general anesthesia, when it is medically necessary in order to treat a patient.

One patient said that she was sort of phobic herself. She needed nitrous oxide and she happily paid for it. Patient suffering from special problems such as those who have severe phobias and gag reflexes, those with very low pain thresholds, patients who don't get numb with local anesthesia, and even very young kids who cannot hold still often use general anesthesia or deep sedation technique to go through the dental processes.
