Fruit Machine Secrets - Part 3

By: Terry Spader

6. Read Your Machine
Many machines actually give out hints on what to do. These are easy to miss, but once spotted
can be extremely useful. For example, the machine’s logo may light up, or it may emit an alarm
signal. If this should happen, check out the LED display – you may see a cue to Hold or Spin
which, when followed, will produce a win.
7 Nudging
Here’s a tactic to try if you’re offered:nudges and no win is possible. If possible, try to get two
matching symbols on the winline. On some machines there will be an indication that, if you then
press Start, a win will come in.

8. Win Above/Below The Winline
A tip when you get three matching symbols above the winline and the hold buttons quickly flash (or
the reels shake) is to hold them all. By doing this the matching reels should drop down onto the
winline.
9. Win Bank
Never leave money in the Win Bank in the belief that there’s more chance of winning because the
machine ‘hasn’t paid out yet’. This isn’t true. Always collect the money – you can still put it back in
the machine if you wish.
10. Skill Stops/Hi-Lo Gamble
These are common features on fruit machines. A skill stop is when the player has to hit a button to
stop a flashing light in the right place. You need to ascertain whether it’s a ‘true skill’ machine
(what you hit is what you get) or a ‘pseudo skill’ machine (the machine decides what you get –
what you hit is irrelevant). Nudges are a type of skill stop – if it’s a ‘pseudo skill’ machine you may
find that your nudges never quite get you a win. Related to this is the Hi-Lo gamble. Many
machines have a feature reel where you have to gamble on whether the next number will be
higher or lower. Don’t be fooled into thinking that if you get, say, a ‘2’, you’ve got a good chance of
getting a higher number next. The next number will depend solely on whether the machine knows
whether or not it can afford to make a payout. You’ll often lose on a ‘2’ or ‘ll’ because the machine
throws these numbers up deliberately to make you confident enough to put more money in. Some
machines/manufacturers are less biased than others. This is another case where getting insiide
information will pay dividends.
11. Watch Out For The CL Light
Watch out for the letters CL flashing when your machine is paying out. These initials stand for
‘cash low’, indicating that it’s time to stop playing that machine and move on.
12. Ernptiers
An emptier is a method of playing a machine in such a way that you can totally "Empty" the
machine of all its money. Emptiers are not knowingly put onto the machine by the manufacturer,
but are "Bugs" or "Oversights" in the machines programming. Emptiers are becoming extremely
rare on modern machines, and you would be very lucky to find one
.
13. Obtain A Refill Key
Refill keys are used by engineers and pub owners how much money is in the hopper and payout
tut If you’ve got one you’ll be able to tell whether the machine has been filled and is likely to pay.
To obt one try checking classified ads, or the internet (fru machine chat boards; Ebay and other
auction sites Alternatively you may be able to get one from an employee of a fruit machine
company. Most refill ] are universal keys, although manufacturers are introducing keys which only
work on one type of machine.
14. Choose your establishment carefully
You may not realise, but machines pay out more in some establishments than others. The least
profitable machines tend to be located in train and bus stations, airports, cafes, chip shops, and
taxi firms’ offices. These machines are there to relieve the passing public of their cash, and the
serious slot machine gamblers leave these well alone. Machines in pubs, clubs, bingo halls and
working men’s clubs are usually slightly better, but the machines with the highest payout
percentage and the highest jackpots are those in casinos, plus those on the cross-Channel ferries

15. Pick the machines with the best percentage payout
By law, a slot machine must display a sign saying what percentage of its total takings it pays out.
The most common type of fruit machine, found in pubs, stations and bars, usually pays out
between 70 and 80 per cent.
Casino slot machines will pay out a higher percentage. This is generally around 85 per cent,
Although some establishments advertise slots that pay out between 97 and 99 per cent of their
earnings. These are used as a way of enticing customers in - the sound of machines constantly
paying out can be extremely attractive!
When picking a machine to play, take a good look at the small print on it to find out what the
payout percentage is, and go for the highest one. If you’re still not sure, ask a member of staff to
find out which slots pay out the most.
16. Play with a betting bank
It is always vital, when looking for long-term gambling gains, to play with a betting bank. This way
you know how much you can afford to lose. Then, when you hit a jackpot, set a stop-loss limit to
ensure that you walk away with a profit.
17. Make sure you know how to play
There’s no point attempting to make money from a machine if you don’t know how to play it. Many
slot and fruit machines have a ‘feature screen’, with all kinds of odd noises and flashing lights.
These might be enticing, but don’t let them blind you to your goal of making money.
If you’re new to a particular machine, observe others playing it beforehand to get a feel for it. Then
practice playing with small amounts of cash before you start going for the big jackpots.
18. Check how much the machine will pay in cash
Be sure to check beforehand that the machine will pay out in cash and not tokens. It could be very
frustrating after spending £20 to win a ‘worthless’ £100 jackpot!
