Get Your Ears Looked At

By: Dorothy Schulman

How much do you know about your ears? For example, if you go scuba diving or like to shoot a gun on a range, should you wear some sort of ear protection? For me and you, those would be ear plugs. Jane turns her music up as loud as it can possibly go. Some say this will destroy your hearing, but are they really right? Tom fears that ear wax will affect his hearing with clogs. IS it wise for him to constantly clean his ears? The right answer is 'yes' when it comes to Charles, but 'no' when it comes to everyone else.

Teenage voices may undergo changes as the young adult grows, but the same is not true of teenage ears. Changes in air pressure post the biggest threat to hearing. Pressure breathing is a necessary part of training to scuba dive. If you are too close by, a gun or jet motor gust can hurt you. Unfortunately for parents that are sick of that "noise" coming from their kids' bedrooms, loud screaming metal music does not pose the danger to hearing loss that many people once thought it did - even at full volume!

Ear wax that resides in the ear canal is actually not disruptive to auditory ability, a fact many physicians are trying to spread to their patients. When you clean your ears be sure to keep the washing on the outside of your ear, never ever on the inside. Sticking a matchstick or bobby-pin into your ear could result in an infection or a punctured eardrum.

Have a physician or nurse examine and clean your ear if you tend to have wax build-up. Again, we must never poke inappropriate objects into the ear canal, and these include tootpicks, hair pins and any other pointed objects.

Hearing tests within the school system are much more prevalent to assist in assessing a student's problems. Not getting a high score on one test does not mean you have a hearing problem, however. Recovering from a cold or even unknowingly choosing not to hear what authority figures are saying could cause you to get a low score the first time around. Yes it's possible that a bad attitude might be creating your hearing issues, so take another hearing test to confirm this.

Before jumping in a swimming pool while you are suffering from a hearing infection, check to see if it is a good idea. Some treatments and medicines that treat ear infections specify that the ear canal should be kept dry. Talk to your doctor if you develop pain in your ears.

A slight hearing loss after a cold is not at all uncommon. However, if the problem lasts longer than a couple of days or happens when you have been healthy, you should see a doctor immediately. Your middle ear may be holding on to some liquid that needs removed, as leaving it there untreated will result in permanent hearing loss.

Keep in mind that, if you deal with hearing loss, one out of ten American citizens have some form of hearing loss that can be made better with some kind of treatment. Because of that small, delicate little instrument in your inner ear, you are able to listen to the sounds of a magnificent symphony and the cry of a newborn child - so appreciate your hearing! Health care professions can instruct you as to the best ways to protect your ears and their healthy levels of hearing. Doctors will have suggestions for those suffering from colds and also for sports participants. If you already have auditory problems, they will be able to advise you on effective strategies to overcome your difficulties and ways to help others with the same problems.
