By: Doman Kittan

This husband never seems to hear a thing she utters is a fairly common wifely complaint, the general suggestion being that she's been purposely tuned out, her husband boring a whole through the morning paper rather than get bored bickering with his wife. But then perhaps, the mister should be given the benefit of the doubt on this situation. Who knows but it might be true that his wife's call to let the dog in, Maybe he really didn't hear that call to help set the table or take out the garbage or let their pet dog inside the house. But then there is a survey that has been accomplished a couple decades ago showing that 14.5 million Americans suffer from loss of hearing which really deters their ability to understand conversations and to function vocationally and socially. Lately it had been declared by the US Department of Health Education and Welfare that people from ages 17 to 44 hearing impairments top the list of chronic health problems in the U.S., with men more frequently afflicted than the women. Hearing aids of today, which are of transistor models are certainly different from ancient hearing trumpets espoused before and the former offers the best solutions also.

It was shocking how over seventy per cent of Americans who buy hearing aids do so without the benefit of a prior professional evaluation by an independent medical specialist, otologist, a doctor trained in the science of the ear and its diseases, audiologist, a certified hearing specialist, or both was revealed in one of the latest research studies released. Let us look at this New York newspaper's staff who revealed his case.

This man who was just in his thirties bought directly from a retailer a hearing aid after finding that his hearing with time worsened. In the years that followed, the hearing worsened. When he finally sought medical attention because he developed pain and discharge from his ear, he was found to have an inoperable cancer. It is only at otology clinics that hearing patients are first fitted with an aid appropriate to the amount of hearing loss they suffer, briefed on its use and then asked to return after 2 months for another important check up.

They will replace the aid if it is not proving satisfactory. The hearing aid replacements are for free for the people serving in the military or those who have already retired. As for these men's dependents, they are just billed a small part of the cost on the basis of the rank of the one that is sponsoring their needed service. Indeed, noise has been known to account for more cases of hearing loss even when you put together all the other known denominators.

The usual suspects that lead to noise found in most homes are as follows blenders, vacuum cleaners, hair dryers, air conditioners and garbage disposal equipment. Snowmobiles, rock and roll music and the steady roar of traffic can also damage hearing. One ought to know that since there is no way to reverse serious hearing damage due to noise, it would be best to wear earmuffs and take noise control seriously which are indeed great preventive ways and the best medicine too. Hearing disability can be brought by so many things.

Those who have been suffering from diseases of the middle ear, exposed to drugs or had viral infections will most likely lose their hearing. Some individuals, sadly, would be born with hearing loss as a result of certain genetic ailments, prenatal exposure to a viral infection such as rubella, a drug that damages hearing, a birth injury or inadequate oxygen while he was being delivered by his mother. The deterioration of nerves and blood vessels through aging, by viral and bacterial infections, including high doses of a drug, aspirin, some forms of antibiotics, some diuretics used to treat high blood pressure, or at times, a tumor on the auditory nerve can lead to certain kinds of hearing impairment.

Avoidable hearing loss can be prevented if there is early treatment of ear infections, as shared by many doctors. Other tips would include not flying with a cold, not to use instruments which also include cotton swabs in order to eliminate wax in the ear. It is advised that wax that interferes with hearing should be left there until removed by an otologist who is an expert in this. The doctor should be able to adjust the dosage or change the drug if it is found to affect hearing. Adults are compelled to have a hearing test included in their regular physical assessments.

Such kinds of tests can be extremely noteworthy for those who are working daily in very noisy environments should find these tests useful along with those who are over the age of 65 or those who are quite prone to hearing disability because of intake of certain drugs. It should be made mandatory on the first two months of life of infants who weighed less than 3 and a half pounds at birth, endured viral infections in the prenatal period or have birth defects in the nose, ear, or throat and lastly, if the family history reflects childhood hearing impairment, to have audio logic assessments.
