How Important is a Frame?

By: Shirley Charles

When you are able to come across the right framing selections then you can easily transform a relatively inexpensive print or poster into an expensive art work. Matching art is not the purpose of mat colors but to enhance it. Ideal is a double or triple mat if you want it to pick up a color from the image. For the bottom mats get them in color but stick to neutral ones for the top. Getting double and triple mats will result in added dimension when framing.

The size of the piece as well as the width of the frame is important when determining the mat width. Never make your mat and frame of the same width. It creates a striped appearance that detracts from the image. Considering the bottom mat of a double mat it should extend one half inch. All sides of the mat should have the same width for it to look good.

Consider distinctive edges in your set of floating prints and other images. For a floating image it is hinged to the front of your mat board. Via the mat board a border is created around the image. There are prints with deckled edges that are uneven but they can be placed on a mat even if not at the perfect center. When there is nothing distinctive about the edges the mats can be cut so that these pieces can be easily placed over the print's edges.

There are times when framing photographs becomes a challenge. The best selection for formal photographs like wedding photos and portraits are ornate wood frames in silver, gold and a variety of natural finishes but simple wood or metal frames in black or silver or with light natural wood frames are great when it comes to art photographs including those in black and white. Using gold finished or cherry wood frames for black and white photographs usually induce competition.

Use elaborate frames when it comes to antique photographs. Use silver frames when you are dealing with old black and white photos. Complementing sepia prints are antiqued gold finished frames and wooden frames in ebony walnut, cherry, and mahogany. Fabric liners as well as ornate mouldings go best with traditional paintings including portraits and landscapes. If you have contemporary paintings go for simple frames and avoid liners.

Framing has a variety of purposes other than being used for prints, posters, photographs, and paintings. What could be framed are political buttons, old letters and postcards, fabrics, theater tickets, christening dresses that you may want to hang at home or in the office. For gallery style framing the minimalist look applies. In this case the frames are wooden in matte black or natural finishes.

Only straight edges exist with these frames and there is no ornamentation. Other than being 8 ply thick the mats used for gallery style framing come in different shades of white. Considering a small image measuring around 3 by 5 inches, mats measuring 5 inches can be placed on all sides. The viewer's eye is drawn into the image by the heavy mats aside from making it seem that the piece is important.

Ornate wood frames remain popular because they work well with antique furnishings and reproductions. Affluence in the mood of the 1980s is represented by high sheen silver and gold frames but when it comes to the reserved spirit of the 1990s antiqued silver and gold frames represent this. Industrial metal frames are a far cry from the metal frames of a decade ago. Much wider with cleaner lines not to mention brushed finishes with cross hatching are the new versions. These and the earlier metal frames are all economical framing options.

When it comes to famous photographers they have been able to bring back art photography while restoration services are to thank for making it popular to restore and frame your family's own antique photographs. With time the value of antique posters increases and even if they are rather expensive to frame they are still less expensive than many original artworks. When it comes to loft dwellers and people with lots of wall space these work great.
