How to Cope With Teenagers – Some Useful Advice

By: Mas Smith

It is always far easier to see other people’s faults than it is to see our own! And we have all done some pretty stupid things at one time or another, haven’t we? Life is one big learning curve and mistakes are often the only way of us understanding things on a deeper level. We will make a lot of wrong decisions in our teenage years, simply because we are still finding things out for ourselves. But this is unfortunate when it results in a brush with the law...

Our actions will normally have consequences and this is a very important lesson to learn. Many teenagers are well known for being a little wayward and they can soon get themselves into a whole lot of trouble. But this is not the end of the world! As a parent, you may well feel like pulling your hair out, but it is actually the perfect time to take control of the situation.

Here are a few tips for anyone having problems with their teenage son or daughter –

- Don’t be Overbearing.
Okay, so they may appear to be going off the rails, but do not be ‘in their face’! If you go blazing in then they will not thank you for it. Allow them to rebel, as long as it is causing no harm to anyone else.
Being over-strict will only ever make them feel stifled and this can cause a great many other problems.

- A Watchful Eye.
Most teenagers will have a particular acquaintance who you just know is bad news. But if you try to stop your son/daughter hanging around with them, then they will end up feeling really resentful. As frustrating as it may seem, you need to take a step back and allow them to make their own decisions about other people. Just keep an eye on things from a distance to make sure that there are no immediate hazards...

- Legal Help.
So, your teenager has done something disrespectful, shameful or just plain stupid and they have got themselves in trouble with the law. BUT DO NOT DESPAIR!!
This does not herald ‘the beginning of the end’of your little family unit. Instead of just giving in to the desire of saying ‘to hell with it all’, this is actually the time to make a true difference!

Help your son/daughter to find a good solicitors in Leeds (or wherever it is that you live) and go with them to their appointment. Instead of viewing this as the first part of a downwards spiral, you and the solicitor may just be able to help them to see it as the best time to turn things around for the better!

- Be Understanding.
One last piece of advice; but a very important one!
Going through the teenage years is often a difficult, painful and confusing time. A maelstrom of emotions, hormones and thoughts are responsible for a good many teenage problems. Try to remember back to your own experiences.

Be as supportive as you can and always take the time to listen!
