How to treat hearing loss

By: Rauslly Stark

People don't ever think that they will ever lose their sense of hearing. Unfortunately, this couldn't be farther from the truth as hearing loss is a very common problem among anyone today. A person first needs to know what the cause of hearing loss is, so as to avoid it, then find out what can be done if already been afflicted.

Aside from other abnormalities, babies are more at risk of getting hearing loss than anything else. Kids as small as possible can already get hearing loss if not properly protected from it. Hearing disorders are also caused by eating medication, experiencing trauma or just being sick.

Loud environmental noise often is the culprit when it comes to a person losing his or her sense of hearing. An airport worker such as a runway assist personnel are regularly subjected to extreme levels of noise. Power tools are machinery that emit loud levels of noise and protective hearing equipment should be worn to avoid damage.

Hearing aids are given by doctors to effectively treat many kinds of hearing impairment. There are a ton of different kinds of hearing aids used to treat problems with hearing and each of these have their own pros and cons. Hearing aids in general will still just collect and amplify sound to a user.

Where the electro acoustic device is worn will determine the class of the hearing aid. Behind the ear aids are called BTE and these types are simply made up of a case, tube and ear molds and are placed behind the ear. With the BTE, only the ear mold is placed inside the ear thus there is less risk of moisture and earwax damage to the whole device.

Hearing aids in the form of a bionic ear are starting to be prescribed to people as well. The cochlear or bionic ear implant needs to be surgically implanted underneath the scalp and right behind the affected ear. The cochlear implant works by picking up sounds and speech, then converting these into tiny electronic impulses that are sent through electrodes to nerves that are connected to our brains, which our brain can distinguish as sound.

The parts of the cochlear implant are a microphone that picks up sound, a speech processor which filters audible speech, a transmitter which sends signals, a receiver and stimulator which converts signals into electric impulses and an array of electrodes that send the impulses to the nerves connected to the brain. Only developed and rich countries are able to provide patients with this implant option as it is a very expensive procedure. The success of the operation lies in a lot of factors such as a person?s hearing history, cause of hearing loss, amount of residual hearing, health status and commitment to rehabilitation or post implant therapy.

Lastly, along the lines of science fiction is another form of hearing treatment called gene therapy. A person doesn't have to worry about bulky hearing aids anymore, as gene therapy may one day allow people to grow new body parts. Gene therapy is the hope of tomorrow and is still a new science today.

While prevention is still the best cure to hearing impairment, when hearing loss is unavoidable, these hearing treatments will provide you a glimpse of hope in recovering or managing it. There are many types of hearing treatments available, and the only way to find out which one is for you is to find a doctor. It is hard to imagine a life without hearing.
