If Not for Pain, Fewer Patients Will Dread Dental Procedures

By: Jroutle Edgers

My dentist 10 years ago took time to understand what I was saying and did something about it. He would not begin with the procedure without being certain that I was actually numb. He also took a look at my x rays and tested whether the nerve shot with novocain indeed made different locations numb. I could not find the same persistence when I moved to another place so I stopped going to dental treatments.

I made up my mind to jump over this anxiety after experiencing a terrible tooth pain a year ago. I went to have my teeth checked by the dentist referred by my wife's friends. I was eventually referred to a specialist in San Francisco for people like me when he had a hard time with the novocain.

It only took a while for me to comfortable in this office and that was after I found out that they offer general anesthesia for dental works. The friendly staff asked me to answer some survey about the possible items with which I may have an issue. A familiar instinct of fleeing was even described in one of the sections. It asked whether I postpone dental appointments continually, which I did.

I was placed under general anesthesia in the office in order to wrap everything that needed to be done on my teeth in that one visit. A general anesthesia for every visit is just too costly for most people. The procedures have a lot of extra cost and I had to shell out more than $1000 on the anesthesia alone. In my situation, I needed deep cleaning and a lone tooth needed prep for a crown procedure. They trimmed one tooth down to remove the damaged surface and another tooth was prepare for root canal procedure.

I don't remember how long it all took. If general anesthesia was taken out of the procedure, I would be needing four separate visits and that does not sound good. Just choose between a day of appointment but with general anesthesia or having local anesthesia but with four separate appointments.

It is not sickening to be under general anesthesia, but it will make you sleep the entire rest of the day. My wife once had four wisdom teeth cut out in one procedure under general anesthesia, and she was as sick as a dog for three days. My insurance does not pay for the soothing agent, but they did shoulder the other workup which amounted to approximately $1,000. Nevertheless, one of the teeth has to be operated on by a different dentist including a separate sedation and this will cost an extra $1,200.

So that year, my insurance was maxed out so quickly. This is probably exactly what I will resort to if this happens to my mouth again. I don't think I would have managed to go through with all those procedures just by doing local anesthesia, I probably would have avoided that appointment. I just had one major procedure and the rest of the succeeding visits were for cleaning and thus not involving any needles. My fear of dental procedures, however, will remain in me.
