LEGO Mindstorms NXT 8547 Review (669)

By: Sammie Fields

The beauty of the Mindstorms NXT 2.0 8547is you can realize, build and program your own robot. But it doesn't stop there!

As you get more experienced, you'll find out how to go past the user's guide, and as is the nature of Lego, you can ignore all the rules and go on to build anything you feel. Over time your robots will grow more complicated both in the way they appear, and in the way they perform - the things they can accomplish. Some of the abilities will simply shock and surprise you.

You won't exactly cause the first robotics revolution with your LEGO Mindstorms NXT 2.0 robots taking over the universe, but with all the amazing things you can do with the LEGO Mindstorms NXT, you'll be interested and amused for a lifetime. It's kind of like that old classic Lego set that you might still have hidden away. It's always good fun when you bring it back out and see what new things you can construct. The Mindstorms set will have a similar effect, but better - you'll never store it away in the cellar or the basement, it will always be kept where you can see it - ready to be drawn away and played with again and again..

It IS a lot of money to have to pay for a Christmas present, however for something that will last you a lifetime, the LEGO Mindstorms NXT 2.0 is most certainly worth buying this Christmas.

Who Is The LEGO Mindstorms NXT 8547 Set Suitable For?

Mindstorms NXT is designed for all who are more than 10 years of age. The instructions for building and programming your 1st few robots are really quite simple to follow.

Ofcourse, anyone hearing the world 'programming' is likely to think it's perplexing, but it's remarkably easy when you actually get it and give it a go.

Those who are younger can explore many ways to have fun with their robots, while on the other hand someone older or more experienced can practice more compound programming to design more complex robots.

What Do You Get Inside The Package?

The LEGO Mindstorms NXT 2.0 consists of a whooping six hundred and nineteen pieces. Included are a number of rods, beams, sensors, connectors and wheels.

The Underlying Construction Block

Mindstorms has a different look from LEGO, due to its basic piece being a beam instead of the classic LEGO brick, giving it a kind of Meccano quality. You don't need any extra equipment though like Meccano, with Mindstorms you just need your hands... and a PC.

Owing to the large number of similar-looking pieces, you may find yourself wasting a lot of time at the start trying to find the right unit. But when you've played around with the set for a while you'll start making those robots with amazing efficiency.

3 Motors

These servo motors will give your robots motive power.

The Sensory Units

The sensors enable the robot to gather information regarding its environment so that it can then process it and act accordingly. You'll find the following sensors with the LEGO Mindstorms NXT 2.0 (8547)…

1. A sensor for light, which measures levels of light and can even distinguish between different colors, giving your robot the ability to react according to any colors that you might present to it or it may chance upon during its movements around the house.

2. A sensor for kinesthetic input, that enables your robot to 'feel.' No I'm not talking about emotions, but rather about touch. Your robot can be activated to do something when you or something else touches it..

3. An audio sensor which is the 'ear' of the robot, allowing it to 'hear' different sounds.

4. An ultrasound sensory unit that makes use of echo location, so your robot can decide how far away it is from an object such as a wall.

The Intelligent Brick Of NXT

This is (along with the sensory units) the essential unit that differentiates Mindstorms from the LEGO Technique range. It processes the info from the four sensors and depending on whatever program you wish to put in, orchestrates composite movements in your robots by controlling the 3 servo motors, whether it be by stepping forward, turning a wheel, shooting balls, flipping through pages in a book.... and the list continues.

User Booklet

The User Guideis great to get you started, with easy steps on how to create four robots of progressive difficulty.

Past this you can go on to make, build and program anything you want. When you're lost for ideas, you can always go out and get yourself some experts guides written explicitly for Mindstorms NXT 2.0 8547, which will run you through how to make more advanced robots.

Be warned though, you may face some frustration from not having enough parts to construct absolutely anything you want. If you run into this pitfall, rest assured - you do not need to purchase a whole nother Mindstorms set. Instead, you can merely complement your current Mindstorms set with parts from the Lego Technique range.
