Laser Hair Treatment Requires Several Sessions to Show Evident Change

By: Betin Pomprs

Hardly has anyone successfully removed unwanted body hair through such means as waxing, shaving, or electrolysis. Physicians and day spa owners look to laser hair removal as the best method of eliminating unwanted hair and encourage its use just a few years since it was first approved by the Food and Drug Association.

The drawback of the laser treatment is that the unwanted hair doesn't completely disappear. The best and barest results require numerous treatments and can end up costing thousands of dollars. More important, the treatment carries risks. There are people whose skin type might not agree well with the treatment, and might end up with scarring or pigment changes. If the person who does the procedure is not careful, burns and blisters may occur.

The melanin pigment in the hair follicle is hit by lasers. The lightly colored skin surface is ignored by the laser fired across the skin, but the dark follicle is hit and damaged by it. While the laser will not remove all hair in most cases, permanent reduction of hair is possible, with about 30 to 75 percent of the hair gone from the treated area in just a year. Managing the hair that remains after the treatment would not anymore be an arduous task since the hair would be light and fine.

It may take three months before most people see significant improvement in their conditions, and it is during this time that they must have more treatments for positive changes to be possible. Growing hairs, not dormant or dead ones, are the only hairs that may be targeted by lasers. Repeated trips back for treatment would be needed to catch as many hairs as possible while they are in their growth cycle.

Those patients who have light skin and dark hair will receive better treatment from laser hair removal than those who don't. Since lasers are used on the pigment, they aren't really meant to bee used on those who have dark or tanned skin. Lasers are not able to tell apart hair melanin from skin melanin. This is the reason why blisters, scars, burns, and pigment changes happen to dark skinned patients who take the treatment. A test patch is done to see whether the treatment would work with a certain person's skin and hair.

If your skin is the type that does not often get burned and tans easily, then it is best to seek a specialist on hair removal on darker skin. Even if a doctor may be experienced in treating dark skinned patients, the treatment he performs would usually last longer and not be as effective. Hair should never be removed from tanned skin. To increase their revenues, spas, dentists, and family practice physicians among others offer the treatment at discounted rates, but dermatologists and plastic surgeons have the most experience.

Patients are strongly advised by experts not to go to spas for the treatment, but to go to a doctor's office instead. It is a requirement in several states for doctors to be present during laser hair removal procedures. Lasers are dangerous, even if they are also beneficial. 50 percent of dermatologists mentioned in a recent survey that they do damage repair on those who have been affected by the laser in laser hair removal.

The treatment feels like having a rubber band snap against your skin, most people claim. An indicator of the procedure not being done correctly is the amount of pain you experience in the treatment. A shot would be a worse experience. Medical specialists will sometimes have in hand cooling sprays or gels to soothe the skin. Afterward, skin may be red or crusty, but usually clears up quickly.

How much you would spend for laser hair removal would depend on the body part being treated and how much hair it has. A session of treatment for a bikini line would range from $300 to $700, but a session for a man's back would cost at least a thousand dollars. But some patients need as many as eight or 10 sessions.
