Last Minute Hotel Deals across the country - get them for pennies.

By: gareth johnson

On a budget? Stay in Scotland? That's right. Everybody's feeling the pinch at the moment, aside from those who are so rich they'd never to feel it.

So what do you do? Simply abandon the holiday for the year. I think not, and I'll tell you why....

We have an amazing country on our doorsteps. Some of the scenery in Scotland is breathtaking, and when the weather is good it's pretty much unbeatable.

My advice would be to get yourself a week or so off and take the car up north. Or if you live in the north, take some time out and discover it again. If you're coming from England, have a couple of nights in Glasgow or Edinburgh - great restuarants, nightlife, history, galleries, shopping, gigs - and crucially, inexpensive hotels. There are so many hotels in Glasgow, for example, that you'd struggle not to get a cheap room on t'internet. I use laterooms for work and can always get somewhere for pennies.

Glasgow, in particular, has great live music on most nights of the week - from the biggest acts in the world (Take That have just played, ACDC are about to and we're going to see Springsteen on 14 July. After watching his performance at Glastonbury that's definitely something to be looked forward to.) We've also caught some brilliant alternative music recently - Australian exports (and touted by Noel Gallagher) The Panics played at King Tuts recently. Stadium band in a tiny venue, not something you'll see very often.

As for Edinburgh, in August they have something called "The Fringe". To wander round the Capital during the Fringe really is an eye opener - the place is simply buzzing. It really has to be experienced to be believed - even if you don't fancy the more 'arty' events, the variety is incredible. The only problem is that the hotel prices shoot up at this time of year (or rather the 'cheap options' simply dry up). That said, it's worth heading through on the train even for the day.

I can't stop typing without a hearty recommendation for King Tuts, on St Vincent Street in Glasgow. It's a fantastic venue, dead close to the city centre and has one of the best jukeboxes in the world. Problem solved.
