Learn The Facts About Hearing Aids

By: Donna Barrers

By amplifying nearby sounds, hearing aids have continually brought relief to sufferers of hearing loss. They amplify any sounds by the means of a tiny microphone and speaker to a level that the wearer can hear.

They often allow the wearer to lead a much better life with a greater level of interaction with what goes on around them. Unfortunately not all the people who could benefit from such devices are using them. Unfortunately, around 90% of people with some form of hearing loss cannot be treated medically so hearing aids play a great part in helping they majority go about their lives.

There are many different types of hearing aids available today, depending on the individual needs of the patient. One of the greatest variations in hearing aids is in the way they are worn.

Canal Aid devices are placed inside the ear canal and are not visible when they are worn. A canal aid should be fitted to ensure the right size and shape is worn making them more comfortable for the people wearing them. These can be extremely beneficial to people who suffer with slight or moderately severe hearing difficulties.

A different type of hearing aid device, known as In-The-Ear devices, fit inside the out ear. These types of hearing aids are visible but generally remain hidden by the ear. People with both severe and mild levels of hearing loss can use these devices and they are also easier for the wearer to insert. An adjustable volume control and the ability to use a telecoil to improve the use of a telephone are two advantages of these types of devices.

The hearing aids that you see with a section behind the ear are known as 'behind-the-ear' aids, but also consist of a speaker inside the outer ear. The speaker is separate to the microphone and the amplifier within the earmold behind the ear. These types of hearing aids are the most visible but the separate speaker means that they can be effective for helping with very severe hearing problems. These devices though can sometimes have problems associated with feedback such as a whistling sound.

Hearing aids can use a couple of different technologies today, and there are pros and cons to each. Digital audio technology and analogue audio technology devices are now available.

Analog devices work by converting the sound waves in the air to electrical signals. Depending on the wearer the devices can be set up to meet their specific needs. It is also possible for the person wearing the hearing aid to make minor adjustments which will benefit them in certain locations.

Digital hearing aids do tend to be the more expensive option but have the advantage that they are more customizable when it comes to the way in which the sound is amplified. They can achieve a better quality of sound reproduction with less distortion. Some can actually change settings automatically to get the optimal sound for their environment.

Hearing aids have come a long way, and users find the current devices to be both comfortable and practical. If you are considering the purchase of a hearing aid, it is important to talk to an audiologist about the best type of aid for your unique needs. By getting the hearing aid that works best for you it is possible to improve the quality of your hearing and give you the opportunity to get on with more without your hearing or your device holding you back.
