Making a Business Out of Pet Portraits

By: nicolle tenny

Whenever she works at home, this graphic artist is haunted by a bunch of little faces. While she was at home, much of her time was spent on work she didn't particularly find enjoyable. Four dogs and four cats look at her through a screened door.

The faces encouraged her to pursue a different career path. As she was making her way to Texas to see her parents, she decided to paint the images of her animals on canvas. Her portraits are made using colors that reflect the animals' personalities.

Capturing the essence of the animals is what she wants to achieve in her paintings. Using the different colors and knowing the animal's personality can help me recreate it in my painting. The pioneer painting was that of a dog which she and her husband found while in Mississippi. The red dog stuck with them the whole time.

For her dog's portrait, she decided on green to show his jealous side. She's not alone in creating animal portraits with nonconventional colors. In 1984, a cajun artist created a portrait of a blue dog with red eyes, a reminder of his own dog who died in 1980.

The blue dog is highlighted in her paintings. While people may find a certain playfulness in the blue dog paintings, there is actually a serious and darker side in how the artist views the paintings. The paintings may look amusing, but there is actually a spiritual connotation to each one. The dog looks at us, making us think of questions that we ourselves have tried for eternity to answer.

The animal's life force should come out in her art. She picks vibrant colors, unusual patterns to mirror how they act. The animals, which she now owns, were either in the shelters or wandering the streets. One of the dogs she now takes care of would take off from a neighbor's house and go to another person's house.

She left fliers in local veterinarian offices last summer to market her pet portraits. She asks clients to give her an idea of the animal's personality and also a photograph. She said her selection of colors would be based on how she understands the animal. The store owner explained that the portraits give customers more than what a normal portrait would give them.

Bright yellow paint used on her portrait perfectly portrayed her energy. Portraits will be appreciated by people who know the subjects in the pictures, said a gallery owner. To view a portrait is different from showing appreciation for a portrait.
