Middle Ear Bone Growth

By: Stephen Brewer

About 12 million Americans from the 16 million who suffer from hearing problems fail to get any help for their condition, and this is proof of how neglectful people can get when it comes to their ears. There are a number of common ear problems people are facing. Having ear wax protects the ear canal from stray particles. There are some people though who produce ear wax excessively and this becomes a problem that can lead to hearing loss. Flushing out the ear wax is better done by doctors rather than self probing.

Aside from this there is swimmer's ear. The medical name for this usually mild condition is external otitis. When a person swims in overcrowded pools or those with too much chlorination then this can develop if the ears are not dried well. When it is not as serious the problem may disappear but antibiotics might be required for severe cases.

If there is a perforated eardrum then a problem exists. Sound waves are sent to the middle ear from the ear canal through a membrane known as the eardrum. When something is inserted in the ear, if there is an infection, or if the person experiences a bash on the head, it can be damaged for it is much closer to the ear opening than people believe. If perforations are small then they can heal naturally but larger ones need surgery. If hearing loss is not bad enough, there is also nausea, vomiting, and dizziness associated with this.

The common recipients of ear infections are children. Infections of the middle ear or otitis media are common when it comes to children. Not turning two years old, 50 percent of American children already face this kind of infection. For these conditions, they may be caused by throat or nose infections or illnesses like the mumps, measles, and even the flu, and they could either be chronic or acute. Sometimes the sever earache caused by acute otitis media comes with fever. A way to treat this is through antibiotics. Possible with chronic otitis media is a loss of hearing. Possible treatment includes draining the ear and antibiotics.

Having bone growing in the framework of the middle ear is referred to as hereditary Otosclerosis. The stapes, one of the three small bones in the middle ear, is affected by the growth by impeding sound transmission. Here, surgical treatment becomes an option. However, when it spreads to the inner ear, nerve function may be impaired. This can be the end of the line in terms of recovery. Frequently affecting women, this is a condition that manifests around the ages of 16 and 40. A bout with tinnitus or a ringing in the ears is encountered after hearing loss.

A ringing in the ears is common and it is known as tinnitus which involves more of a hissing, roaring, or whining sound. Affected are 37 million Americans and from this group there are seven million who are incapacitated. Such an ailment may be due to excessive ear wax and clearing the area of the ear up is all that is needed. If there is fluid in the eardrums, perforations, and problems with the middle ear then the situation may be worse.

Should there be any noises, Otosclerosis is only one possible cause as there are several other reasons that could be behind the problem including arthritis, diabetes, anemia, low blood pressure, allergies, thyroid malfunctions, equilibrium, infections, and middle ear injuries too. For this, you must find where it started and treat the problem. Inner ear tinnitus is the worst of its kind. Most of the time, discovering the problem is a serious challenge. This type of problem can be due to a number of causes and the most common of them include fluid accumulation in the inner ear due to allergies, circulatory and cochlear or hearing center disturbances, infections, and tumors that press against nerves.

Much later, Meniere's Disease can manifest. This may lead to problems with equilibrium wherein inner ear disturbances are caused by allergies, stress, drugs, and diseases. One ear may encounter some degree of deafness. The main effects though are vertigo attacks or a loss of balance plus nausea and vomiting. Going about this problem can be through surgery, the proper diet, and drugs.
