My concept of the perfect Sunday afternoon in old Johannesburg suburbs.

By: Albert Van Der Velden

Having lived the vast majority of my life in Johannesburg I think it may just be appropriate to share with you; some of my favourite ways to spend a Sunday afternoon. I sincerely hope that I have catered for most tastes in this article and hope you enjoy the read.

The best place to lunch at is 4th Avenue, Parkhurst . This is without a doubt one of the vibeiest dining hubs n town and, Sunday is when one steps out to lunch. Although lunch time can be very well supported, you will be able to find a table along this lengthy and charming street. Al fresco is the order of the day which is great in summer months and many restaurants have made provisions for winter months by creating enclosed spaces with street views so a comfortable dining experience is always guaranteed. Naturally there is quite a variety of tastes on offer in venues of very varied character including the boutique establishments, but do not fret, one won’t be disappointed at the service or standard at any of the establishments located on 4th Avenue.

A wide variety of shops find themselves among the restaurants, from antiquities, designer home wares and clothing to art galleries, this street will not let the discerning shopper down. There’s always something interesting to see. Johannesburg and Sandton CBDs are easily accessible from Parkhurst - a suburb finding itself amongst the older more affluent suburbs of Johannesburg.

Making one’s way from lunch to the Johannesburg Botanical Gardens is a mere stone’s throw to an idyllic walk through the gardens. My favourite part of these huge gardens is the rose garden although this huge property has a wide variety of landscapes to enjoy. This terraced garden features a series of fountains, ponds, pools and aqueducts which span every level of this beautiful installation. The garden culminates at a large pool complete with fountain, jetting water some 10 metres high. Emmarentia Dam is on the east side of the gardens and popular for canoeists as well as taking the kids to feed the ducks. There are plenty of trees and large spaces which make a lot of places to enjoy a picnic. Taking a long walk through these gardens exposes you to views of the city and suburbs, really imposing the greenery that Johannesburg has such a wealth of.

Nearby, on 143 Barry Hertzog Avenue, you will find Lapa Fo restaurant, here is a continental kitchen and pizza oven with the largest pizza menu in Johannesburg. Places with a such a large range of pizzas are very few and far between. The owner of Lapa Fo - Percy, acquired his pizza-making skills in Sicily and then used them in London to assist opening a pizza restaurant, after successful endeavours there he returned to South Africa and opened Lapa Fo. The pizzas, salads, pastas as well as the desserts are all characterised with true diversity and fusion to deliver a perfectly good experience. I recommend Lapa Fo to anyone with good taste an appreciation for a simplistic and homely venue.

Emmarentia, Greenside and Parkuhrst are all located in the northern central Johannesburg suburbs . These locations are all located within 5 minutes of each other and a journey from Sandton Hotels will take 10 to 20 minutes. All establishments listed on Sandton accommodation have been star-graded by the Tourism Grading Council of South Africa and are perfect to provide an equally comfortable stay which large anonymous hotels are able to provide you with.
