For the students in the hearing impaired class, each one has a hearing aid suited for his or her hearing capabilities.

A special audio device used by the teacher and students helps the children hear instruction given by the teacher. In operating the phonic ear system, 83 radio frequencies can be utilized. The instructor wears a microphone type instrument around her neck which relays her speech to a receiver worn in each child's ear. Having a number of frequencies allows the teacher to directly speak to a child per given time without disturbing other students.

Even with the 11/2 hours of traveling the teacher says that the one room facility proves to be an impressive destination. Because everything has to be specially made, the equipment can be very expensive. If the complete kitchen set up is not enough, the carpeted room also contains audio equipment and visual aids. Children learn language in the kitchen because here is where they interpret recipes.

Nothing is done without language for this is what the teachers see as the biggest challenge for the students. 10,000 times is the number of repetitions needed for a word to be retained. It is very important for these students although it can bore other people. When describing objects learning is made simpler through sight for those who are hard of hearing. But abstract concepts like time, yesterday, today, and tomorrow have little meaning to them.

The methods used by the teacher are wide in variety. Instruction is aimed at a total communication learning experience so the teacher incorporates both signs and speech. Another concept being taught is lip reading and this is so that students can comprehend through lip movement. By verbal means is the mode of communication asked from students as much importance is given to oral instruction. Acceptance in our society for these children can come in the simple way of them being able to communicate the way we do.

Touch is also a viable learning tool and this is through the tactile method. The teacher will allow the student to touch her throat or feel her tongue to understand the g, s, or th sounds. Every time she walks into the classroom, there is no surprise felt when a student's hand is placed in her mouth. Subjects include spelling, social studies, math, and grammar. Should the student need preparation before entering a regular school system, subjects like speech, gym, auto mechanics, music, typing, and home economics may be offered. Attending the class is a matter of being 18 years old and younger.

Her drive to help the hard of hearing may pose a number of questions. No secrets are kept with regard to her choice of careers. Discovered when she was five years old was a hearing problem of her own. Closed eustachian tubes and no cartilage in her ears became her problem at birth. Together with the people she worked with, corrective surgery allowed them to regain their hearing. Considering hearing loss in children, she already knew what career path she will be taking as early as the fifth grade.

As a graduate of a college in Illinois, she carries a special education degree. In addition to this, she also went to a university in Florida from which she accomplished degrees in deaf and elementary education not to mention received a certificate in learning disabilities. Her previous occupation before coming to Southwest Kansas two years ago is as a teacher in a school for the deaf in Fort Lauderdale. No other alternative but to listen is given to every student as her phonic ear system sends the sounds directly to his ears and this is a big help especially when she has a number of things to accomplish for the day.
