By: Emily Lister

Why party?

Well, to have a great time, of course! That’s the clichéd "frat boy" answer to partying, but that's not the real question being requested here. The actual question goes just a little bit deeper: What's the intention of your gathering?

Tip: always create a party planning list.

Is it to celebrate someone's birthday? To commemorate an anniversary? Mark a major milestone? Or possibly it is just to bring your closest friends together?

The reason why you're having the party will certainly help form and structure the event.
“Unique, but the same.”

That's the mantra you'll need to bear in mind as you plan your party. Possibly you've been tasked with hosting a small event commemorating the retirement of 1 of your colleagues. Why would they ask you? They selected you since somebody rememberd that excellent small gathering you held at your house several months ago.

That's ok, you think. Nevertheless a small gathering of close friends is simple to plan. A retirement party? That's poles apart.

Yes and no. Obviously, no two events are the same -- each one has a distinct goal and direction. But when you scratch the surface of an event, all of them have familiar elements.

All adult events might be classified into 3 major categories: dinner, cocktail, or buffet. Each type has its particular distinctive style and requirements.

Additionally, your guest list and the alcoholic drinks you provide (if any) can be different with the individual type of party, as will the food. Even the time of day you have a party will be different dependant upon the event’s category.

There, you'll discover my complete party planning system. It takes the fear out of preparing your home for guests.
