President Obama and World Contention

By: Aubrey Moulton

Some feel that issues at home have kept President Obama from implementing campaign promises. Instead of focusing on international relations and improving the way many countries see the U.S., he has chosen to target the Afghanistan and Iraq war. He and many other politicians have also dealt with a sagging economy and have been active in campaigning for health care reform.
Because of these challenges the president has been concentrating on domestic regulations and let international strategy bubble away on the back burner. When he has met with foreign dignitaries and gone to visit other countries he has primarily fixed on improving relations with China. There are those who feel he has not paid as much attention to Europe as he ought. This has distressed many politicians because they were so excited for him to be in office. They anticipated things that would improve and the rapport that they would have with President Obama and that has not taken place.
Instead of them feeling like necessary allies they sense that they have been overlooked. And this has not gone over well, particularly for America's European allies who have propped up the country for so long. Some feel that now they are being forgotten because of the new powerhouse China.
But another crisis the president is confronted with at home is that he is having difficulty getting his policies passed within the United States. This maims his international applomb. Doug Paal from the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace stated that "When American presidents are feeble at home, it really does affect their ability to act abroad."
In 2009, Obama visited 21 nations and most of them are countries the U.S. has edgy relationships with. While some relationships have improved, some have remained the same while others have regressed, but troubles are abundant particularly with Iran and North Korea. So it's hard to determine how the world truly feels and if that has improved in general. Iran has little to do with the international community and is working on its nuclear program regardless of their opponents all over the world. And North Korea isn't any better. They won't even go back to the conference to discuss their nuclear program.
The violence in the Middle East is another issue that has seen almost no attention. Before Obama was sworn into office many hoped that some method could be found to curtail the anxiety between the U.S., Israel, and the remainder of the Middle East. America's trustworthiness is being questioned and this has not been addressed anywhere. The U.S. has so many domestic issues that the President hasn't been able to focus on global complications and that has also harmed the image that President Obama was trying to portray.
But as international matters keep burgeoning and the U.S. and other countries remain on their own journeys, the interactions are getting convoluted. The U.S. has enhanced relations with Russia and they are collaborating on pressuring Iran. However, because of cyber attacks from China against the U.S. and the fact that the U.S. is sending arms to Taiwan along with other issues the relationship is getting rockier.
While situations are less than ideal, particularly with Iran and North Korea the world has stepped up to the plate and they do understand that the U.S. can't shoulder absolutely everything. Everyone is trying to work in unison to bring together our global community.
