Preventing tinnitus with right methods

By: Diane Keller

Silence is gold according to a saying. But this very old axiom rings very true for 10 to 15 million people nationwide particularly the victims of a condition known as tinnitus, wherein they suffer from immense and sometimes painful ringing in their ears. A lady from Tyrone has to live with tinnitus. She remembers how her left ear's ability to hear got lost after experiencing what she describes as a hissing sound and that was about 10 years ago. From the hisses, they became really painful squeals.

I'd jump up at night and just walk and sob nonstop, she shares. She went to meet with several doctors locally and in Hershey, all of whom told her she couldn't be helped. She finally found relief with something called a masker, which emits a sound that covers or masks the noise in the ear. I won't be able to get by not even for any person's riches, this woman avers.

Someone afflicted with tinnitus experiences unrelenting ringing or roaring in his or her ears. Such an affliction would burden people for the rest of their lives. It is just distressing that tinnitus, which has many causes, is not always treatable. According to an Altoona audiologist this makes the condition troublesome for the doctor as well as the patient. Not one cure applies to all.

But then there are those whose plights cannot be eased. There are people who care able to respond to drug therapy, while others have a plain predicament such as wax build up inside their ears.

Tinnitus majorly comes from the damage to the patient's cochlea, which can result from several factors, a loud noise or repeated excessive noise, and a decrease in the blood supply to the ear caused by poor circulation usually. There is one audiologist who shares that a tumor or other serious problem can cause the ringing and not tinnitus all the time. As tinnitus is not always accompanied by hearing loss, doctors would find it quite hard to cure. Specific hobbies can put some people at risk for ear damage, and for tinnitus as well. Hunting is one activity she pointed to. She points out that the nerve endings in a hunter's ear can get damaged thanks to a gunfire's loud crack and this leads to buzzing for a short period of time only.

If one experiences ringing in his or her ears after exposure to really loud noises, he must use ear protectors the next time around. It is vital that an otolaryngologist or an audiologist checks the ears in order to rule out causes that can be fixed. Drug treatment may sometimes alleviate the pains of the tinnitus sufferer, but not as a rule. A new treatment called Xanax, according to her is a bit successful.

Many experts recommend maskers, which down the tinnitus by creating a background noise. The hearing aid whose models look like tiny radios and the masker is part of this. Patients have no other choice but to deal with it each day if those causes are ruled out. Doctors then teach patients ways to ignore the ringing or to make it less of a stressor. Relaxation techniques and other exercises can reduce stress effectively. As advised by some experts, hypnosis or acupuncture might be of some help.
