Putting baby to sleep tips

By: Jessie Stone

Aside from feeding, sleep is another necessity for babies. Not only do they grow faster and healthier with sleep, it is said that babies grow in their sleep. Here are some essential baby tips on how to make sure they sleep properly.
Especially true for newborns, day or night is rather insignificant for babies. One baby tip to remember is to train them for nighttime sleep, as to inconvenience the parents less during the night. While they seemingly confuse time, some babies just take to sleeping during the day better than at night - no different from adults who either are more awake in the night or have to work at night. For starters, what is important is to keep a "baby zone" at home at all times; that is, a place where babies can easily fall in (and out) of sleep. This zone, preferably a separate room, must be comfortable in terms of temperature, ambiance and noise. The room may sustain a reasonable level of sound, such as a fan running on low (called "white noise"), but high-pitched noise, such as older kids playing or the phone ringing, may be disturbing to babies and disruptive of their sleep. And s babies are likely to nod off after feeding, breastfeeding must be done in the "baby zone." Babies' sleep is extremely delicate and once they are shaken out of it - and they can be with any disturbing noise or jerky movement - it can be hard to get them into it again, especially if they had just finished feeding, not to mention the incessant crying that nothing can seem to appease. Massage may also help.
Another important tip to keep in mind is to establish a sleep routine. Whether the baby sleeps at night or day, or during naptime, establishing a sleep routine helps the baby ease into sleep using specially applied signals. When settling the baby into sleep for the night, sing a lullaby or massage a particular body spot, hum, rock, cuddle. Do these only when it is time for nighttime sleep - in time babies will appreciate these actions as sleep-inducing. During the day, it is also better to encourage the baby to be awake and active, rather than let him or her fall into naps every feeding time, aside from afternoon naps. Make as much time as you can for you and the baby because aside from feeding time and lulling him/her to sleep (and changing diapers whenever needed), it is recommended that interactions between parent and baby be kept at a minimum at night. The parents' active presence especially excites the baby.
Lastly, always the baby is as comfortable as possible. Babies are not likely to express comfort very well, so parents must instead seek out signals that indicate it. With a warm hand check the baby's nape; if it is warm, he/she is comfortable. Check for signs of sweat. For safety, do not use blankets. If the weather is cold, put him/her in double sleepers, keep his/her hands and feet warm and turn up the heater instead; for infants, a firm and secure swaddling reminiscent of the confined space of the womb is best.
These three baby tips should get both parents and baby on the right track of good sleeping habits.
