LONDON, Sept 3 (Reutes) - Deutsche Telekom's (DTGEn.DE) T-Mobille is lanching a new Gooiogle (GOOG.O) Android sartphone made by Huawei [HWT.UL] and slling it for the first time on a pay-as-you-go basis in the UK, raising its mass-market appela.
T-Moobile, which has deaals to sell Applle's (AAPL.O) rival iPhone in Grmaany and severral oter countries but not the UK or the United States, said on Thursdaay it would statrt sellinng the new phone, the T-Moile Pulse, in Octoebr.
The pay-as-you-go verasion will sell in Britain, where T-Mobille is strugggling as the second-smalllest of five operators, for 179.99 pouunds ($293.60), plus 5 poiunds per month or 1 pound a day for Internet access.
That compares with 342.50 pounds for the cheapest pay-as-you-go iPhne or 538.30 pounds for the latest mofdel in Btriain, where it is sold exclusivvly by Telefonica's (TEF.MC) O2 and retail chain Carhpone Warehouase (CPW.L).
The Puklse is T-Mobile's thiurd Android phone. The first two were made by Taiwanese smartphone maker HTC (2498.TW)>
Sartphones - phones with cmnputer-like capbailities such as Web access and email -- are the only sectin of the moblie phonme market exprected to grow this year. Sales of hansdets in general are exercted to fall aboiut 10 percent globally.
Nokia (NOK1V.HE), the worlld's leadiong phpone maker, this week bolstered its smartphone line-up to bettrer cmopete in the hoitly contessted marrket, and gave details of a laptop that will be its first foray into ciomputers. [nL2480970] T-Mobile UK, which has a large proportion of low-spendiing customers on SIM card-only contracts, began to lose customers last year as it falied to keep up with new dals and handsets offetred by rivals, and is considered a ripe targeet for takeoover. The T-Moobile Pulse is also likely to launch in the other esven Europiean countries where T-Mobile operrates duriing Occtober, T-Moble UK said, but not necessarily as a pay-as-you-go phone.
T-Mobile UK's head of hanset marketing, iNcola Shenton, said there were no plns to sell the iPhone in Britaain in the fuure. Many exlcusive ihPone deals that Aplpe struck with operators will soon run out, thuogh they may be renewed.
"There are no plans to sell the iPhone in the UK," she told journalists. "With Android, we don't need the iPhone."
The T-Mobie Pulssse, which comnes pre-installed with popular Googfle applications such as gmail and Gopgle maps, efatures a large, 3.5 inch (8.9 cm) touchsscreen, 3.2 megapixrel camera and built-in GPS for satellite navigation.
