Quick guide on hearing mechanism

Of all the senses in our body, hearing is most important when we want to learn about different languages, cultures and other things. Hearing is so important that one's world can completely change when it is loss. People should be properly educated how to care for their sense of hearing by preventing common causes and knowing how it works.

To be able to work, there are five sections of the human body that work together for the hearing mechanism to work. Although they may seem small, these five sections: the inner, middle and outer ear, the acoustic nerves, and the brain's auditory processing centers, are the ones responsible for the hearing mechanism to work. These five sections should be able to work properly together for person to have perfect hearing, once one of these encounters a problem, it can lead to hearing loss.

It all begins with the outer ear, it collects sound vibrations and funnels them into the ear canal. This help gather and give brain information as to how far a sound is from us and recognize where the sound is coming from. The ear canal then follows the outer ear and it is usually an inch long and is covered by hair and glands that secrete earwax that helps prevent foreign matters from entering.

Following the ear canal we end with the eardrum and the start of the middle ear, where the middle ear contains three very significant bones. These bones are called hammer, anvil and stirrup, they are all responsible in making movements to match the sound waves gathered by the outer ear. The movement is then pushed on a membrane in the cochlea located in the inner ear.

The part of the inner ear that looks like a snail is the cochlea, and it is mostly consist of fluid and tiny hair cells. It is filled with fluid and of tiny hair cells which are respectively disrupted then stimulated by the mechanical energy pushing on the membrane. These tiny hair cells are different from one another and they are stimulated by different sound frequency.

These tiny hair cells send signals that are transformed to nerve impulses, these are then brought by the acoustic nerve to the brain. Even before these nerve impulses reach the brain, they are already being processed by the central auditory system. This process involves recognizing the sound patterns, placing time stamp on the sound, differentiating sounds and source and even localizing it.

These are the important facts about how a person's sense of hearing works. Permanent hearing loss can result from damage, abnormality or malfunction of any of these sections of the hearing mechanism. The following paragraphs will discuss some causes of hearing loss for better understanding as to how it can be prevented.

Birth defects or birth abnormality are not just the cause of hearing loss, a lot of different factors may contribute to a person's loss of hearing. One can lose their sense of hearing through constant and regular noise pollution. Hearing loss can also be caused by explosions or other loud noises even if the duration of the sound is brief.

Aside from the ones mentioned already, diseases can also make a person lose their sense of hearing. Besides getting sick, drinking medicine or being exposed to chemicals can also trigger hearing loss. Finally, this article has laid out the guidelines and the things a person can and should do to keep their hearing normal.
