Prince William County, VA is in the Commonwealth of Virginia and part of the Washington DC Metro area. It's 2009 estimated population was 394373. Prince William County's county seat is the independent city of Manassas. It is also part of Northern Virginia and one of the highest income counties in the entire Country.

Prince William County History:

Prince William County is abundant in American history. In 1608 Captain John Smith and other English explorers reported the area to be occupied by the Doeg American Indian tribe. The Doegs continued to maintain some villages in the area into the 1650s and at that time colonists began patenting the land.

Prince William County was first created as an act of the General Assembly of the colony of Virginia in 1731, in large part from the western sector of Stafford County and a part of King George County. The area that the Act created encompassed initially all of what was later to become Arlington County, the City of Alexandria, the City of Fairfax, Fairfax County, City of Falls Church, Fauquier County, Loudon County, City of Manassas and Manassas Park.

Prince William County's name was derived from Prince William Duke of Cumberland, King George II's 3rd son.
For years the county was very rural oriented with half the preponderance of the people centered in Manassas, which was home to a major railroad junction. The other half of the majority inhabitants was based in Occoquan and Woodbridge along side the Potomac River.

More Contemporary Growth Statics:

A larger population started growing beginning in the 1930s near existing population centers, especially in Manassas. Manassas' post World War II growth let it to be established as an independent city in 1975. In the 1960s Prince William County started to grow into a bedroom community of Washington DC and the population plodeddramatically to where by the end of the 20th century it was the 3rd most populated local jurisdiction in all of Virginia. The majority of this growth took place in the last twenty years.

Most recent US Census Bureau reports show that Prince William County has a total land area of 348 square miles. Of that 348 square miles 338 is land and 11 is water. Prince William County is bounded on the west by Fauquier County, on the north by Loudoun and Fairfax Counties, the east by the Potomac River in Charles County, MD which lies across the river and on the south by Stafford County.
