SEO Practices For Your Online Writing

By: Jerry Buza

Search engine optimization of your online copywriting, referred to as SEO, will boost your site's ranking by search engines such as Yahoo, MSN or Google. These sites have web crawlers that continually monitor the internet and look for useful and informative content that can be indexed, and thus found easily and instantly with organic searches. You can improve the SEO of text or copy by choosing relevant keywords or terms that are searched for, and using them judiciously in your writing.

Each piece of your website content should be written to make it relevant to a query or keyword phrase that someone searches for. First choose your topic, and then use a good keyword tool to find exact words or phrases that people search for. Whatever type of content you include, whether it is an article, blog post or image, your entire page should be relevant to that main keyword phrase you have chosen as your theme.

Always use the keyword term or phrase in the title of your post or article. It should be near the beginning of the title, as long as it allows your title to flow easily. By writing a title that contains 70 characters, the whole title will show in search results. This is the primary way to make your keyword visible to web crawlers.

Search engines look for more information that a title, including some type of page description. This can be a short summary, a meta description that is visible only to the search engines, or even the first paragraph of the copy. If you use Word-press, it includes the ability to optimize your page with a section to write this summary. This page description must include your keyword or keyword phrase in a descriptive and natural way.

Within a page or article, the use of heading tags optimizes copy for search engine indexing. These can be made obvious by using bold text, using H1 or H2 tags. The use of bullets within an article or piece of copy will also emphasize keyword presence, and increase your page SEO.

You should also use one or two other relevant keywords or phrases from your initial keyword research results that closely relate to your primary keyword. Search engines that analyze your pages will look for not only your main keyword, but look for related phrases that commonly are searched for. Just make sure that all keywords are used in a natural and flowing way, and in a density that appears natural to a reader.

Search engines love to see both images and videos, and will more highly rank pages that include them. With all images, use an Alt tag and a title tag. These tags must include your keyword to be most effective. Alt tags give search spiders information about the image, and will also show up for a reader if images are prevented from appearing.

As you create your posts or pages, hyperlink some of your keywords to other pages on your site. The destination page must contain information that relates to the keyword link. By making these relevant content links within your site, it will contribute to the overall site authority or ranking. Occasionally link also to quality authority sites or pages to further improve your ranking.

Write easy to read copy that flows, has value to others, and uses key phrases in a naturally occurring way. As you write, practice these SEO techniques to boost your credibility with search engines and searchers to help you gain higher rankings and more inbound traffic.
