Salem Is Fun On Halloween - IF You Can Get Hold Of A Room

By: William Luca

These days, I assume all the world realizes that when it comes to Halloween, Salem, Massachusetts is the heart of the universe. With Halloween's popularity growing every year to the point where it's now the second most popular holiday following Christmas, more and more serious Halloween fanatics are journeying to the Witch City all through the month of October. The magical proceedings and attractions, the harbor, waterfront and the historic witchcraft sites of this distinctive New England city are crammed with an overflow of guests from all over the USA and beyond, all anxious to indulge their worship for Halloween with fellow kindred spirits.

So, what else does this bunch of partiers all have in common? Well, if they've journeyed a great distance to be here, they'll want a roof over their heads before, during and after the momentous occasion, and that can be quite a challenge. I've seen "hotel panic" set in when neophyte visitors realize that thousands of people are coming to Salem for that last weekend in October and they're all in need of rooms. So, knowing that forewarned is forearmed, I'm going to try to supply you with a bit of insider information about what to anticipate in terms of lodging in Salem during the major event.

First, if you're a first-time visitor making plans to travel to Salem for Halloween and require a hotel room, it's probably already too late. Determined Halloween lovers who make the pilgrimage each year have very probably booked up all the rooms in Salem's two foremost hotels: the Hawthorne and the Salem Waterfront. And knowing the score, they most likely planned for this year immediately after they left for home last year on November 1 (the saddest day of the year for Halloween fanatics). So now that you have an idea of what the challenges might be, all is not necessarily lost. In addition to the two main hotels, Salem features about a dozen inns and bed-and-breakfasts. They're your next best bet to tie down a room in the city. From here, we must to expand outward. Salem is the county seat of Essex County. As the hub, it's encircled by the cities and towns of Danvers, Peabody, Lynn, Swampscott, Beverly and Marblehead (with the Atlantic Ocean accounting for the remaining side). There are motels to be found in all of these spots and although you'd have to drive to Salem or obtain a taxi or other type of public transportation where it's accessible, it's not a long trip as each city or town is right across the Salem city line.

Subsequently there's one other approach to take when everything else has failed (and you've really procrastinated far too long to find a room). You can stopover in Boston. The capital city of Massachusetts is just about 17 miles south of Salem and has dozens of hotels. You can arrive in Boston by car, train or plane and you can then simply take a pleasurable ride to and from Salem aboard the commuter train or by bus. The train trip only takes about a half-hour and will bring you within walking distance to Salem's city center area, very near to the festivities. The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority is aware that there are lots of people in the Witch City on Halloween and schedules more than the usual number of trains for the event. You might not actually be staying in the city, but the good part is you won't need to deal with finding your way into the city or parking in Salem on October 31st.

So there you have it. Where there's a will - or a spell - there's a way to find a place to stay and have a fantastic time during the spell-binding season in Salem - wherever you end up parking your broom!
