Search Engine Optimization Techniques and Strategies

By: Norman Kirby

Getting your website or blog to be found by the major search engines is a difficult feat but it can be done. Search engine optimization requires time, hard work, patience and of course marketing skills. There are various techniques and strategies you can use to help you out, the most used of which are as follows.

1) Keyword research. You should know what your keywords are and in order to identify these keywords, the niche of your website must be clear. It will be very hard to determine keywords if your website doesn't have a specific niche. There are a lot of free resources available online that you can use to identify and track keywords. Use them well and use them often.

2) Website navigation. Usability of a website is very important. All sections of your website should be easily accessible with ease. The purpose of this is to ensure that all of your content have the same chances of being viewed. This is why you must have a content organization system. You can achieve this by effective tagging and archiving.

3) Link building. Both inbound and outbound links are utilized by search engines to measure the relevance of a website. Convincing other webmasters and bloggers to link to you requires quality content and marketing skills on your part. It is always a good idea to connect with popular bloggers on your niche and pitch link exchanges to them if you have the chance. Link exchanges are a win-win situation for both parties so they'll likely accept your pitches more often than they don't.

4) Article marketing. This strategy is very simple to implement. What you do is write an article then submit it to article directories. The article would include an author bio or a resource box that contains a link to your own website or blog. The more articles you write, the more links you make. Be careful though with the directories you are submitting to. Make sure you view your articles that were accepted by a directory to ensure that it does contain your link.

5) Viral marketing. An article, a photo or a video that goes viral on the internet will reap hundreds if not thousands of links for the website where it's located. Making something go viral is never an easy thing to do but the rewards are so much worth it. So never stop brainstorming for viral marketing ideas.

6) Social media marketing. Social media and networking sites like Facebook, Twitter and Foursquare can be used to help in the optimization of a blog or a website. User profiles in these sites often allow the placement of links. These links usually don't pass link juice but the traffic they drive to a website is very substantial.

The above-mentioned search engine optimization techniques and strategies can make the difference between a website that accomplishes its goals and one that doesn't. So if you are a webmaster or a blogger, make it a point to follow them, implement them and track their results.
