Solving rampant highway carnage

By: grison merman

It was the 20,000 member organization of lawyers, called The American trial lawyers association, who wanted to end the highway tragedy that has long been plaguing the entire country, beckoning the federal government to attack and create a national safety czar to handle this problem and for this, they have already executed a wide ranging white document. Not unless the government does something, states the national trial lawyer's association president as foreword to the said report, deaths from motor vehicle accidents would double or triple with lots being badly injured so all the government agencies are beckoned to act on this and fast.

He blamed equipment as indisputable fact that the federal government had no plans at all to end this immense problem on highway tragedies and highway accidents and did so bluntly. He beckoned all society segments from the law enforcement agencies, lawyers, judges, legislators, insurance and auto industries, scientists and psychiatrists and the advertising and news media, to contribute their efforts to overcome public apathy and solve this once and for all.

Like what had been done for airplanes, trains and ships, it was recommended in the report that minimum safety standards be espoused by the federal government to counter the lack of safety concerns of many tire and car manufacturers. The report stated that slaughter by motor vehicles, a seemingly insoluble problem, must be, attacked by federal, state and local governments as a top priority.

The trial lawyers' principal recommendations called for federal leadership in correcting immediately an inadequate government role in highway safety. According funds, people and authority for a National Director for Road Safety should be done, according to the white paper, and Congress should enact this soon.

One wise proposal was creating a federal bureau focused on licensing to create uniform standards and control in this area. The report states that local political force is to be blamed when it comes to discrepancies and problems miring the licensing procedures. When it comes to drivers? licenses, they proposed that physical and eye examinations, every three years should be done and this was mandatory, they also raised the minimum age limit for drivers to 18, except for 16 year olds who have passed a certified drivers' education course, they also sought that renewal applications to be in the form of sworn statements and affidavits providing strict penalties for perjury be renewed plus, the photo of the driver must appear in his license.

Solutions, a series of them was given by the report once it was established that 55 percent of all the road accidents most fatal were due to driving under alcohol influence. Such entails lowering the blood alcohol level down to 0.1 percent the level wherein drivers are presumed to be driving under the influence and that if this is so, he shall face forfeiture of his license. When it comes to the lowest safety levels for cars and tires, it was stated that government should be able to intervene over interstate exchange.

If only all cars were built with only three necessary changes, the white paper reads, then its occupants have a better chance of survival even if the crash would be up to 35 miles per hour. With impact speeds of 35 miles or below, 87 percent of accidents arise. They proposed collapsible steering posts, doors that will be kept shut tight in the event of an accident plus shoulder harnesses in all automobiles, all basic and necessary alterations.

The association of American trial lawyers also recommended other features and safety designs such as safety wheels, disc brakes on all the wheels plus dual brake systems, padded head support to prevent whiplash injuries, taillights and headlights visible at both sides and in the front, elimination of the X structures, more light body colors use, permanent flashing warning signs within the automobile especially during emergencies, hydraulic bumpers to absorb a greater amount of impact and of course, cornering lights to illuminate the area where the car would be turning. Due to the fact that not automobile travel state restrictions persist, the association states that it is only fitting that federal government laws be advocated in order to direct minimum tire safety and performance standards and not to forget, uniform tagging that uses very comprehensible language.
