Some Information Of How Physicians Emerged

By: olivia botsford

The modernization of the medical profession over the years has resulted in elaborate names for common ailments and 9-to-5 office hours for physicians. Physicians have it much easer today than the general practitioners living in the country did years ago, although their job today is still demanding.

There is a documentary which recounts what life was like for the doctor in earlier days of what is now an urbanized city. History shows that the first immigrant to come to the city was a physician. At the time, he was exploring the community for possible medical needs. However, because of the limited population in the area, the doctor eventually decided not to stay and went back to his former practice where there was no shortage of patients.

The area had several physicians, but they were not well off, as patients had little money to offer as payment. And when the Civil War broke out, most of them decided it was time to move on. Those nineteenth century doctors who remained behind became heroic in their dedication to the community. Pursuing a career as a doctor was a difficult undertaking for the men (and a few women) of that era. It involved grueling work, no guaranteed salary, and the willingness to toil around the clock, throughout the year. Even though some patients did pay their bills, the majority of them did not pay their doctors.

Not many evenings went by that the physicians weren't called to tend to a patient. The stamping of feet on his front porch and furious beating on the door would awaken the poor doctor and his sleepy neighbors. The bleary-eyed physician would harness horses to his buggy and set out on a cold, lonely ride to see his patient.

These 19th century doctors did not always receive cash for their services. Some patients had no alternative but to pay their medical bills with corn or vegetables, or even by doing chores and other work for the doctor. In order to supplement their meager salary, some hardworking doctors sold homemade medicines in addition to their practice. One such industrious man was this remarkable pioneer doctor.

There was no Food and Drug Administration to regulate these medicines, and one highly educated doctor sold home brews that were of questionable efficacy. A headache and neuralgia medicine which he manufactured obtained some success. At a price of three doses for ten cents, the client was promised that his problem would go away in about five to 20 minutes.

Many other doctors owned and operated their own pharmacies in order to add much needed income to their coffers. One doctor founded the first drugstore, opening it on the main street of the city. Taking his lead, another three doctors decided to start their own pharmacies as well. After the first hospital in the area was built, doctors started to enjoy an improved working environment, and more hospitals were built in the next few years. Not long thereafter, a motto and code of conduct were instituted, clearly showing that the medical profession had provided substantial impetus to the hospital's confidence and expertise, mainly due to improved facilities and knowledge.
