Sports Betting Advice: Don’t Get Caught Up in the Super Bowl Hype

By: Rich Allen

F-U-N. That’s what you must keep in mind as we move toward kickoff to the Super Bowl this upcoming Sunday. Oh certainly, I’ll be making my usual wagers to make the game interesting, that’s part of the ritual of the day. Even citizens who are totally inexperienced will take part in some form of gambling on Super Bowl Sunday. Maybe you buy a square at the local barroom to try and match the numbers on the final score. Or maybe you are a seasoned gambler and you’ll be making a bet on one team or the other to cover the pointspread.
But one thing you must not do: Going all out with a huge bet and stretching your financial limits on the big game. There are two possible reasons you might consider doing this. The first is you did poorly gambling this season and you see the Bowl as a chance to make back all those losses in one shot. The other is you’ve been having a great season and figure you can’t fail now.
In the first instance you can make a bad situation much, much worse. In the second, why would you want to risk all that profit you’ve scratched together over the last few months on ONE game? I know people get a little depressed because football is done for the year, but there are plenty of other opportunities to benefit and keep things exciting.
Bettors are having a record-breaking year in the NBA so far, and who can forget about March Madness and the enthusiasm of the NCAA tournament. Are you really going to sit out those games? Of course not, so why put your bankroll at risk by making a monster bet on one game?
I propose maintaining a disciplined strategy when gambling on sports. You should be in it for the long haul. That means you should only be betting from anywhere between 2-5% of your total betting bankroll on any one game. That includes the Super Bowl, the National Championship game, or what have you. There’s ALWAYS another game to bet on so why get so jacked up for just one?
My suggestion: invite a few friends over, have a couple drinks and some great apps, and make some bets on the game. Maybe even make a few prop bets, those are always fun. But don’t go all out and try to make a killing on the game then have it blow up in your face. It’s a surefire way to mess up what should be a great day.
